XKR 4.2 vs XKR 5.0 vs V8V 4.3 and some TVRs thrown in too.
Discussion
Properly stumped with car choices at the moment... Looked at a cracking Sagaris and Tuscan mk3 Convertible this morning. Seriously tempted by both.
However, if I went for the Tuscan I could also afford a XKR 4.2 as well.. GT + sports car to choose from.. Ace!
Or, I could keep my 2000 Tuscan Red Rose which is great but not as sorted as the later pricier models and get a XKR 5.0, or a V8 Vantage 4.3 (maybe stretch to a 4.7 but with the additional running costs of having 4 expensive to run cars in the stable I'd like to keep a bit in reserve)
I'm pretty reluctant to not have a TVR... am I being nuts? Would I want to drive a Tuscan with a Vantage waiting instead?
I suppose I may even be able to afford a v12 Vantage if I got rid of the TVR altogether... maybe... just... then again, forget that.. man maths / budget creep is going silly...
Top Gear / Clarkson did the 4.2 XKR vs V8V and he reckoned the Jag came out on top... just... (on points, his words).. but then, it's not an Aston. But if the 4.2 is that good... the 5.0 with facelift is just excellent.
I've driven a 4.2, not a 5.0 or the Vantage yet...
Mileage/MPG/practicality doesn't come into it at all. Maintenance costs do to a small extent, but mileage will be fairly limited on all of them. Residual values assuming 3-6k miles a year on the Jag/Aston do come into it, Jag will depreciate a lot more/faster than the Aston, which in theory should never become a shed of the week, whereas the Jag will definitely head that way.
help!

you're a pair of b
ds...

Residuals wouldn't be too bad either.. haven't looked at service costs...
I still think it's overkill though.. and this is where the jaguar problem raises it's head... 40-50k get's you a very nice XKR 5.0. Essentially same power, very similar experience. cheaper to service, cheaper parts, but residuals will be cack.
Stop it! V12V is OUT!

much as i love my xk 4.2
IF you can fund a V12V stop faffing and DO IT
its an "propper" Aston
performance better than all of the V8's you list
its an aston
a bit more sporty rather than wafty though still a comfy place to be
did i mention its an ASTON
as i say as you are able to afford one than do it you wont lose unless you break it.

You see I was the same as you and I was looking at the F-Type V8 and every report I read it came out on top against the V12V-S but when I saw the Aston that was it there was no going back!
Don't go anywhere near a V12 it will not do you any good at all
Drove a v6s the other day, great car. V8s or v8r must be bonkers.Don't go anywhere near a V12 it will not do you any good at all

Don't like the prospect of the "from
New" depreciation though. Hardly a massive pool of used ones to choose from!
Seriously v12v is out, it'd ruin me!
Decision almost made. Aston is out, Didn't get on with driving a vantage at all.
Jag it is..
F-type V8s (12 months old)... TVR will probably have to go..
or XKR-S (3 years old), can keep the TVR.. (haven't driven this model yet, but I liked the 4.2XKR).
Nearly there... (Until I change my mind again next week)

Keep Tuscan RR, buy 5.0 XKR. The 5.0 engine is brilliant. There's nothing wrong with the 4.2 engine - but the 5.0 is just in every way better. Much, much better.
We tried the XKR-S for size - specifically to see whether there was any way my wife could use it as her daily driver. She really, really wanted to but there was just no way it was happening with 2 children. Our compromise was the XFR-S where she's getting the engine, steering and suspension from the F-Type R and XKR-S but with 4 doors and back seats.
These current Jag halo models are absolutely wonderful things

150 horses better with the R-S !!!I'm surprised how cheap they are.
I'll just leave this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXN65vnetNE
Since when is a Tuscan not a GT? Wtf would you want to get rid of the superior car and replace it with ones vastly more compromised and not as good?? And that certainly includes the V12V. Good grief a Sag hands it its buttocks on a plate in every aspect!
Either man up and get a DBS or a Vanq. They at least offer aspects different and better than the Vantages and the Tiv.

Are you really saying the V12V is compromised, inferior and not as good as a TVR Tuscan? I don't understand that at all. And I'd much rather have the V12V than a DBS or a Vanquish, particularly the latter with it's antiquated automatic box.Either man up and get a DBS or a Vanq. TVRs are hard work to drive. I love mine, but it's fatiguing. The Jaguar isn't, and an XKR-S will not lose sleep over a DBS and it will not be expensive to maintain either.
The XFR-S will eat my Cerbera alive point to point. I'm keeping the Cerbera, but I've never considered TVRs good GT cars. The fact that they're too cold in winter, too hot in summer, noisy, have no cruise control, manual gearboxes etc do not make them good GT cars IMHO. Superb sports cars, but cack GT cars.

50 miles on twisties in the Tuscan is a joy... 100 miles Is fun, 150 is tiring, 200 is painful, any more and I may die..
I'd be dead by the time I got to the Italian mountains if I tried it in a day. (well, deaf and a broken spine)..
F-type, XKR, (or aston) I could drive 800 miles in a day and be good for a few beers in the evening and be fresh for some mountain road fun the following day.
Tuscan in my mind is closer to something like an Exige than anything else. In fact, in my experience its better on track than it is on the road!
I don't want rid of the Tuscan, I love it... but if I upgrade to a "better" Tuscan or Sag that writes off all other options, they ain't cheap and I just don't think I can get my head around 55k+ for a Sagaris (as nice as they are)...
Compare that 55k to what you get with a XKR-S... Aircon, satnav, carbon leather (creature comforts), 550bhp, a tidy gearbox (same as in the F-type??).
Only downside is a TVR shouldn't depreciate, but a Jag will, f
k it.. if I don't do it now I never will..Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
