I need a cheap, spacious estate as I'm about to embark on a fairly major house renovation. Budget of approx £2k for 2002/3 ish. I don't like autos, and don't do the miles to justify a diesel. So, petrol manual!
Does anyone have any experience of these, and what to look for. I'd also be interested if anyone can compare the 2.4 petrol with the 2.0T.
Cheers

I had a 2.0T S60 so similar to a V70 just without the arse end. Cambelts are at a weird interval on them at around 94,000 IIRC but cheap to have done and they are fairly simple to work on engine wise.
HOWEVER...
They love wishbones and they require the removal of the front hub to do, mine went through wishbones, drop links and the other **** thing on them is the rear shoes. They have a habit of removing the material from the shoe which causes the handbrake to stick on or even worse to lock up and destroy the hub. Not a very well thought piece of design. Add to this you cannot retrofit anything as the electrics would have a s
t fit (can-bus) and anything that you need to change is coded to that vehicle and once its coded is useless. For example I lost my spare key (luckily had keycover for the remote and fob on my insurance) spoke to locksmiths place who all give that sharp intake of breath when you mention its a Volvo. You have to buy the key, the fob, 2 pieces of software from Volvo and then pay the dealer to fit it. Turned out at around £280.00 all in. Door locks are another common thing to go wrong and again you guessed it they're coded too. I had an issue with my alarm siren on mine that caused the alarm to keep going off and kept coming up with a warning message in the display.
To drive they're lovely and spacious, cruise really well (although dont try a 3 point turn in one) but some of the repair bills can be eye watering!

I had one, loved it -- very comfortable. It wasn't economical though.
The ETM and ABS ECU can be problematic, both failed on mine. You can have them reconditioned for quite cheap, much cheaper than a replacement from Volvo. I think the ETM issues were resolved for 2002 and onwards cars, so get the latest one you can.
