The Golf GTI (and R) seems to hold its value well for a hatchback. I know this as I recently bought one and for the same money I could have had many newer/faster/lower mileage alternatives.

Largely illusion on BMW etc. Add what the first punter paid for all the extras then check retained value again.

I suspect most main dealers still willing to sell a car of that age will add a reasonable chunk to cover the cost of providing a warranty for 12 months. I'm guessing the trade in values aren't so appealing. Setting aside BMW dealerships 6-8k seems to be the going rate for a 2006/7 320d.

Golfs really surprised me, TDI Golf estates, just wow (especially compared to the car you can get by going with another manufacturer). Especially as there are about 3 TSI estates in the country.

Nicely specified Audi's or BMW's that have done fair miles and look cherished.

My 2008 Skoda Octavia Vrs estate has been very good in that respect.
I paid £13000 for it @ a year old in 2009 with 5000 miles on the clock.
Its done 53000 miles now & is still worth 7K & am selling it to a workmate for that,

So £6000 for 5 years motoring...

(2 services /2 sets of tyres/1 X egr@£300 fitted/1 aerial base under warranty, that's it)

I agree with the Audi A2 above. Low mileage 1.4TDi (90PS) fetch very high premiums. But it feels a little harsh to put it in the run 'o' the mill class of cars.

Audi A3 always look like poor value to me.
