£2000: Involving daily driver

So I have had my Mk4 Golf GTI 1.8T for a year now. It's served me well and while never having been particularly exciting it has been a lovely ownership experience.
So i'm looking for a replacement, I don't necessarily want something that's literally faster but just something that feels faster and is more involving.
I'm really looking for a Hatchback/Coupe.
The current top pick is a Clio 172/182.
What else should i be considering?

A Clio 182 would be my first thought, mine was the best car I ever owned. There are many ruined ones out there though and £2000 might be on the low side for a really good one. A belts+waterpump change is around £720, tyres are ~£100 each and exhausts are ~£400 so it is important to make sure that it will not need any of these imminently or budget for it in the purchase price. There is nothing to match it for performance, fun, economy and reliability at the price though.
Unfortunately while the MX5 is a nice choice due to my height I spent the whole of my test drive staring at the sunvisor.
I haven't really considered the Celica actually, I'll have a look at those, thanks for the suggestion!
So the 182 is looking like the best choice and as you say it looks like it can't really be beaten for the money!
Unless anyone else has got any further suggestions?

Well I currently own a Golf 1.8T used to have a Clio 172 Cup
All I can say is get the Clio such fantastic cars the golf is not a patch on the little thing I was devestated when it was written off (someone smashed into the side of me) I did 22k trouble free miles just needed oil, filter and plugs. Also very good on fuel averaged nearly 10mpg better than I do in my Golf at around 36/37 ish and could see over 40 on a long run.
Just make sure the cambelt and dephaser has been done as otherwise its a £500 job other than that not much goes wrong they are great to drive, quick, handle amazing and just generally a lot of fun also come quite well equipped you will not be disappointed!

I'm yet to hear anything bad about them!! Thanks for your sharing your experience, interesting to hear from someone who has done the same albeit the other way round.
On another note I regularly see 36 normal driving and 40mpg on longer journeys from my 1.8T so maybe you might want to have a check over yours? Just a thought buddy!

Are there any good ones left? They used to be everywhere, but I do seem them less and less now. Buy a nice one, treat it well and I doubt you'd lose much on when the time comes to change.

E36 328i is very decent but (imvho) an E30 spanks it for steering feel.

I know what you mean. We went to the Isle of Man on a Ducati 748 with Ventura rack, tankbag, and throwovers.We would have taken the MR2 instead, but we couldn't fit as much luggage in it as on the bike.
