Swapping private plates, 2 plates 3 cars

Hi all, I'm generally more of a lurker than a poster but I can't find my answer by searching this time so here goes.

I've recently bought a new car for my wife off a friend. Because it was a bit of a sudden event he didn't have chance to swap his private plate off the car to his new one. My wife's old car came with a 5 digit private plate which although means nothing to us, because I don't like the big ugly square number plate holder on the front of the new car, I would like to put her old shorter plate onto the new car. Is there any way to swap her old plate to her new car and at the same time swap my friends plate from her new car and send all 3 v5's off at the same time? Or do I need to swap my friends plate off the new car first and wait until the logbook comes back before sending it back off to get her plate put onto it?

Reason I want to do it all as quick as possible is so we can get her old car up for sale as soon as we can

You can do it all in one go, you'll just need a v317 for each transfer.

When doing a complicated one (a five way transfer is my record) I usually right a covering letter explaining what I am trying to do and what outcome I am looking for eg reg A on car 1, reg B on car 2 etc.

I did this a few years ago - complete with a bullet pointed step by step outline of what should happen and what plate should end up where. It again involved 5 vehicles (2 bikes, 3 cars).

I all went catastrophically wrong - NOTHING ended up on the correct vehicle and one plate, the most valuable (an ABC 123 type) disappeared completely .

However I did manage to get hold of a chap at Manchester DVLA (on the phone no less! A miracle!) who sorted it all out basically there and then, and just said "stick the correct plates on the correct cars" and it all came out in the wash.

I can laugh about it now, but when I got all the docs back with the wrong plates on my face must have been a picture

And I'm guessing I can put the car into my wife's name at the same time?

One last question, do I need to wait until I get the new v5's back before I can put the plates on?

You can do keeper changes at the same time, just fill in the new keeper section on the V5C and put their details down as the registered keeper on the V317.

You will get back a tax disk and replacement MOT (if applicable), you'll also get an authorisation to make number plates (if you need it) which is when you can change over the number plates, no need to wait for the new V5C although with Swansea doing transfers rather than local offices sometimes you get the V5C before the replacement tax disk.
