My second car, help please!

Hello

I'm now 19 and have been driving around in a 2.0L Vauxhall Omega and it has served me well for about a year. The problem is that the MOT has come up and its a complete wreck, needs a new windscreen, cam sensor, two rear tyres, tracking, coil pack, cooling fan sensor and this would have been okay but the cambelt is 10k miles over and I've been running on borrowed time. Forgot to mention the horrendous knocks and rattles everywhere, dents, scratches, cassette player, the misfire, the heater on so it doesn't overheat, lack of antifreeze due to a leak, oil leak and weak alternator.

My dad bought the car for £600 and its thirsty but I do low miles so its no problem.

I'm looking for a new car, something as big and better. The only similar car I can think of is the Rover 75 and I was thinking of a convertable but I need 4 seats. Any input from anyone?

I'll probably get £150 scrap from it so something around £300 - £500

Belts might not have been done, and could be circa 500 quid if needed, but I'd just take the chance for that money and enjoy it!

seen some 406 coupes for around £500
might fit the bill
they are an awesome looking car, and fk all performance so insurance should be ok

you can't simply list cassette player as fault
is the cassette player broken, or is it simply that it doesn't have an ipoo 9000s dock port?

Do this. I sold a 180k miles Omega 2.5 for £395 on ebay. It had a leaking waterpump (and when I say leaking you had to stop every 10 miles to put a couple of litres of water in). It made horrible noises from the engine, all 4 tyres were on the limit. Heater and aircon didnt work, rusty arches and lots of dents and scrapes. In my listing I recommended the buyer trailer it away as it wasnt going to get far. Polish bloke bought it and got about 7 miles before the engine seized.

My next one was a bit better, 3.0 Omega. Rusty arches and 170k miles on it an everything worked (mostly) but I had to sell it when one of the kids projectile vomited over the whole interior. It was revolting. Bloke bought it for IIRC £300 and broke it for parts.

You'll always get more than scrap value on ebay.

So stick it on eBay then. How much do you reckon I'd get for it? Its taxed till august and it still runs. Its the basic model with elec windows at the front and air con. GLS

Just a joke about the casette player but one thing about this car, it never dies. The engine is solid. Dodsy you have given me hope.

The 406 looks good, any other cars I should look at?

By the way if I were to go astay, would a MX5 be a good one to go for? I was looking at the 206cc as it has 4 seats but its a little out of my price range.

And are there any cars similar to the omega and 75 I should look out for? I like the 75 and its shape but looking further into it the engines are no good.

Eh? I don't understand what you actually want here. You mention big cars, wanting a car with 4 seats and a convertible. Then mention a 2 seat small pug 206cc...?

My money would go on the 406.

The 206cc has 4 seats but its only a dream so disregard the convertible bit. Back to large 5 seat cars.

The 1.8K series head gasket can be fixed permanently for around 350 quid if it goes, but it is the one to avoid if any.However,the 75 I linked to earlier was a V6 with 29K miles,not a K-series, quite what you expect to find better than that for the money is beyond me.Rather than work on myth,hearsay and internet legend,pop onto www.the75andztclub.co.uk and ask away on there.Probably the most helpful forum out there,there are members on there that will even do a free inspection on your behalf if a car is miles fom you.

I actually feel qualified to mention my own car on one of these threads.

I was looking for a similar cheap runabout earlier and I went for a Rover 623. It's older than the 75 but it does have 4 seats, is dirt cheap and is basically a Honda Accord underneath (including engine) so it should be relatively reliable.

I spent £290 on mine (inc. 5 months tax) and it's due for an MOT on Saturday, which it should pass without too much trouble.

At <£600 you'll struggle to find a 4-seat convertible that isn't shot to hell. The only thing I can think of is an old Escort convertible:
