Soft-top egos categorised
Discussion
The thread about leaving your roof down and parking the car in a busy place got me thinking about soft-top owners.
At risk of offending some of you/them, I will try to categorise them below:
1: Astra/Focus/308/Megane/other Euro-box with roof chopped off. You yearn to press the button to lower the roof on days even when you know it's too cold or rainy to do so. Once it's lowered you become very self conscious but seem to always look back if someone looks at you to see if they give a reaction. Your car isn't desirable just because you can go topless. In general people are sniggering at you.
2: 3/4/6, C/E, A4/A5 cab' - tricky one. Your category is broad. You could well be a traveller with a scrap metal business and no road tax, or you could be a 40year old IT Director going through a mid-life crisis who had to buy a car instead of having a mistress. Either way, your wife/partner/mistress sitting next to you with her sunglasses on needs to put this in to perspective; You're in a diesel love. He can't quite afford it. He's cheating on you and he's had to extend the mortgage by five years to satisfy the urge for this car. You may be the envy of some, but not as many as you think. Get saving for the deposit on your next one when the lease ends in three years.
3: TVR/Caterham/Lotus/Anything 'purist' - Good man, you're following your passion and driving a car designed as a soft-top as a sports car to be at one with your surroundings. You may have a smirk on your face but that's usually due to the adrenaline from the blast in the last b-road and not because you care what others think. There's no need to boot it leaving black lines in a town center though is there?
4: 911/Boxter/Cayman/Ferrari/Maclaren/Maserati/Jaguar F-Type - Be careful of the envy everywhere and watch for spitters. You may have laid down a substantial deposit but unless you're really naive, you can justify this purchase as most of your other affairs are in order. If you can afford one of these, then you could have at least learned how to drive it as intended instead of pootling around and rarely opening the taps properly. Noise please! We want to hear them at full throttle more often.
It has struck me that those driving the lower end cabriolets have the biggest egos and I really can't understand why.

I have an Elise. The only thing I hate about it is that it's a convertible. I like being indoors. I don't find being deafened by wind roar makes me feel "at one with my surroundings" it just makes it harder to hear the engine. If I want skin cancer I'll catch it from walking, as god intended.

How about 6ft 2 rugby playing type in a mk1 SLK!
It's a folding hard top though so I will forgive you from missing them off your list :-)
Surely all you can see is the top band of the windscreen? It's a folding hard top though so I will forgive you from missing them off your list :-)
I bet your fellow egg-chasers have had plenty to say about that, you rugger-bugger!
Urban Dictionary:
A large, often hairy, man who plays rugby for some local or regional club, is built like a brick house privy, and after the game retires to the pub with the rest of the team to sing rude songs and tell blue jokes.
Them:
"OH! Football is for poofters
And tennis is for queers
Cricket is for batty boys
who take it up the rears
Golfers bite their pillows
And swimmers do the same
But! We are proper men because RUGBY is our game!"
Me:
"You're a rugger bugger, intcha?"

Where does the MX-5 sit in your categorisation?
Very often driven by petrolheads after cheap thrills but also driven by hairdressers the world over.
If driven by a petrolhead, no issue. Cheap thrills, rwd, great for learning about control etc.Very often driven by petrolheads after cheap thrills but also driven by hairdressers the world over.
For those that buy it for anything else; mental!
