Keith Richards' Ferrari Dino to be auctioned

Celebrity car ownership is always a slightly awkward subject. Vendors may proclaim that because of so and so's brief tenure, the car they have for sale is worth more. Or they may have a car once owned by a notable, admired celebrity but said vehicle could very well be something nobody wants to own.

Coys sell great cars, take bad photos

Here we may have the perfect combination of superb car and damn cool celebrity ownership. This Ferrari Dino once belonged to Keith Richards, in fact he bought the car new in 1972 and owned it for 14 years. He covered 25,000 miles in that time, originally in the US and then in the UK from 1975.

Amazingly, the Dino has only covered another 3,000 miles since Richards sold it in 1986, spending most of that time in a Japanese collection. It will be sold with a letter from Rolling Stones' manager Allan Dunn confirming Richards' ownership.

The Dino goes to Coys Monaco auction without reserve. For reference, those that aren't on POA in the PH Classifieds are around the £250,000 mark, which you would have to assume this car will exceed. Other highlights from the lot list? A Tazio Nuvolari Cisitalia, a Citroen DS Decapotable, one lovely Maserati Indy and a very cool Abarth recovery truck.

I've just sent mine a link to this article. He got out of his RHD light blue/tan GT (35k miles from new, Classiche etc) about 2 years ago... Won't make enjoyable reading!

You're not wrong.

Only two or three years ago, a Car-Collecting Client of mine was in the hunt for Dino.
Chris Rea beat him to it (a dark blue one in fact).

It was about £90K from memory, Apparently, the story went that even CR was not immune to Mrs R's dispeasure with the quantity of cars he owned, and so it was put back up for sale through Bob Houghton, where he'd seen it the first time. A matter of months after the first time he'd seen it, he bought it for circa £120K after I had had a look over the bodywork.

So, if celeb' ownership counts for anything, then this one too should be worth north of quarter million - not a bad return in 2 years...

Same bloke has a F40 which he did Mille Miglia in the same year as the Dino aquisition occurred, and its value has now soared too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the best performing asset class by a mile that is remotely mainstream and very simply accessible - in all honesty, I'd have made a killing with classic cars if I'd had the capital.

For now I live in hope that my CSL will return some profit...
God it winds me up when I see these predictions coming true time and time (and time) again !!!

Back in the mid-1990's I was after a fun car.

It was a toss-up between a Caterham 7 HPC or, for admittedly a couple of thousand more, a Dino. Both were £20k plus or minus.

I would think that I not the only one that thinks Dino's are overrated, overpriced and really rather underwhelming.

It's just not that pretty.

I shall counter that by saying that it is one of the world's most beautiful cars IMHO.

My friend's flamboyant dentist cousin had one, in the 70s. His was silver and he had it resprayed red.
When he sold it, he bought a Merc 280CE Coupe in brown IIRC....

250k and upwards for a Dino when there's a 250GTE on here for 120k? No thanks... 250k is more like Daytona money! No matter what anyone says, the Dino will always be the slightly awkward baby brother to real Ferraris... it's definitely not a bad car, but it's definitely not a 250k car either.
