What fun car would you guys recommend for a 10 day Euro Road trip.

Ideally I want something with;
A fair bit of power for all the mountain roads,
Convertible,
Seats 2,
As cheap as possible (max probably £3-4k)
Something that won't be impossible to sell on after the trip.
Preferably with aircon too!

My mate and I can't decide on what to use, we are building a kit car but it won't be ready in time for the planned trip so we were going to buy something to use just for the trip and then re-sell once we get back.

So far suggestions are;

MX5 - not enough power
old jag/bmw - not convertible and a bit on the heavy side
xk8 convertible - too expensive

Fire away!

I did think of that, but the only ones I can find for sale are out of the budget.

For a 10 day trip with 2 in the car you're going to need something decent sized.

I go on trips in a Fiat Barchetta which is tiny but it's just me in the car.

That would chuckout an MR2 for having small boot[s]

Thought they'd be available for 3-4k

Disagree. I've done lots of road trips 2-up in the Caterham.

OP - power isn't so important in the twisty mountain roads so don't dismiss the lower power cars if those are the roads you're heading for.

BMW E36 or E46 convertible?

Not sure how much luggage you'll be carrying, but does give you an option for putting crap on the back seats if a Z3 2.8/3.0 is too small.

I did a Euro Tour in my BMW 330 Convertible. Was the perfect car for it! Tons of lugguage space, great on the twisties.

The earliest 350Zs are approaching £4k, might be able to find a roadster amongst them if you're lucky...

Don't dismiss the MX5 out of hand , whilst the power may be modest compared with newer cars, it is the perfect tool for squirting around the back roads of French countryside
Read of my French road trip here , post No 4

I did 14 days in an MR2 turbo, the two of us with camping equipment. There's enough space if you pack smartly. Aircon worked perfectly too.

TVR S Series - ticks all the boxes (other than air con) , don't forget it's all old Ford bits no worries about reliability. Could end up making you money as well...

Mk1 SLK, we are taking ours to France in July!

My dad bought one on ebay for 1600 quid, bargain of the decade

As above, MK1 SLK, I picked up a 2003 a few weeks back and was swiftly promoted to daily driving duties,
taking it to Europe in a couple of months, lots more room than the GF's Z3
