£16-20k budget... What to buy?

Looking for something that seems hard to find these days.... Must look good, have a nice interior, classy/premium image and be no older than 4-5 years old. With my budget what would you buy and why?
Have so far looked at BMW 1 Series Coupe (too odd looking), Golf GTI (to dull), Audi A3/S3 (expensive and a bit dull), Audi TT (too effeminate?), Scirocco (odd looking from some ages, dated interior), Astra GTC (naff image), Focus ST (too cheap and chavvy), Seat Leon Cupra (naff interior).
What's left? Or are the negatives for my shortlisted cars unfounded?

Well it sounds from your list as if you're after a hot hatch, I'm not sure I'd call any hot hatch "classy"; they generally have quite a youthful sort of image. I suppose the TT could be called "classy", as perhaps could the Peugeot RCZ.
With those requirements, I'd be looking for something like a non-sporty spec A5 or A6. Maybe an E-class coupe?

Completely accept I'm biased but I wouldn't say the Scirocco's interior is dated - especially not compared with the rest of cars listed (I wouldn't say that any of the interiors mentioned are particularly outdated though).
I can understand your comment RE: the Scirocco looking awkward from some angles but you do learn to like it.

Yep, I know that. A Golf GTI is classy in my book, maybe not for some people on here but I've always bought bog standard hatches in the past, looking for something quick and well built. Need something no longer than 4400mm so it fits in my garage and doesn't get covered in bird crap, tree sap etc on the drive. You'll need to go left field and avoid German rep hatches. Try Lotus, Jaguar, Alfa maybe. And why the need for a sub-compact sized car?
Volvo C30 T5 with the R-Design pack.
Pros: Fast, comfortable, easily tunable if that is your thing, proven mechanicals, smart looking (IMO), amazing seats (some of the best I have ever sat in) and they handle well enough - it's no sports car but it's perfectly acceptable. Rare on the roads too.
Cons: Can be thirsty, if you need a good amount of space look else where, I had one for nearly five years and as we don't have kids etc it did fine. You'll get a few bags for a weekend in the boot, or the weekly shop, but you won't be putting a cabinet in there!
Failing that, go insane and buy a Z4M.
