clicking whilst turning
Discussion
Just picked up a Volvo v40 shed. It's amazing and I'll do a readers cars soon.
It's almost immaculate and even surprised me on the way home when I discovered the un disclosed heated seat switches and even more surprised when it turned out they both still work!!
Any way when pulling away and turning into/out of a junction, there is a clicking noise, related to wheel spotted when turning right.
Am I right to assume CV joint has seen better days?

Interesting, not sure the shock has failed on this, the suspension generally seems quite tight. No wallowy baggy-ness. I checked out the cv boots just now and I think they look pretty good. No splitting as far as I can see. Still could easily have had a problem in the past and they've been regressed and rebooted and now the bearings are starting to go.

Yes I drove an old Passat for quite a while with the CV clicking until one day it let go as in a multi story which was ever so slightly inconvenient!! Simple enough repair with basic hand tools if you are a competent diy mechanic...It's almost immaculate and even surprised me on the way home when I discovered the un disclosed heated seat switches and even more surprised when it turned out they both still work!!

From my experience they can last a long time after starting to click. It's almost immaculate and even surprised me on the way home when I discovered the un disclosed heated seat switches and even more surprised when it turned out they both still work!!

MoT is ok unless CV is worn to the point of slack movement - you'd need to grasp the drive shaft and try to turn it relative to the wheel to find out.
But if you start to "feel" it on the corners, instead of just hear it, then it's time to replace it.

Stone, glass in the tyre? click click click...
well it would click click click all the time wouldn't it! It only does this on medium to tight turns when accelerating. I.e. turning into or out of a junction from a stop. If I go round the corner off the throttle it doesn't do it.Otispunkmeyer said:

I wouldn't leave it too long - I had one break up on me; it was not a pleasant experience as the car just suddenly turned hard-left on to the verge. I had only bought the car the previous day and was taking it back to the dealer to let him listen to the noisy CV joint...
Amusing hijack: An elderly mechanic friend (Bob) used to do occasional work on my cars. He would dictate the details to his wife, who would then raise the invoices for him.
I was amused to see her translation on my invoice as follows:
"Replace C of E joint and fit new boots".
She was a regular churchgoer, bless her.

I will check the tyres for stones on the inner edge. I didn't notice any when examining the CV boots which are below:

ill have to get them inspected then to make sure.
I can't think what else it would be... drive shaft going perhaps? but then there maybe should be noises heard under any acceleration. Its worth getting it up on some jacks to have a good look anyway I think, it is 16-17 years old after all and there is plenty of crud on the components.

Could be a wheel bearing failing?, you could be hearing the click as it's under load. That should be easyish to diagnose with the wheel off the ground by holding the wheel top and bottom and trying to rock it (make sure it's well secure on jack/axle stands) even spinning it might let you hear something.I can't think what else it would be... drive shaft going perhaps? but then there maybe should be noises heard under any acceleration.
