I'd consider myself a 'car person' in that I like cars, have always admired sporty cars and taken good care of my own car - despite many of them being worth no more than a couple of grand.

I have attended car shows and motorsports events and enjoy going on a good drive.

I've never been 'annoyed' as such by other enthusiastic people, unless of course they are putting others in danger / playing silly buggers on the road.

However this weekend I witnessed something which just made me angry and almost ashamed of being a 'car person'.

We pulled up at a very busy pub with people in the gardens enjoying the sunshine and a car park which was similarly packed-out. A Nissan GTR and a Honda Integra could be heard before they were seen, but as I was unstrapping my daughter from her car seat they felt it necessary to launch successively across the short car park to the other end.

Why?

It's a nice car, we can all see that. You should be proud of it, you should be able to show it off.

But why did you have to do that? I'm a doting dad, I won't take an eye off my daughter who is just a toddler for more than a second, but if she had already been standing by the car I would have been even less impressed by this little clan of 'car people'.

It gives us a bad rep, as the crowds gathered at the pub all stared in disbelief and shook their heads.

Does it make you feel 'ashamed' to almost be a part of car culture when someone has to go and do something irresponsible in front of their peers?

The cars were all lovely; but I would have appreciated them more if they just burbled into the car park and pulled up appropriately. Instead, they made themselves look like a bunch of tools. I hope they read this and maybe next time they decide to pull up after a nice drive, they will do so with a bit of consideration for others.

In short: tw*ts pull up in busy pub car park and treat it like Santa Pod = peeved dad.

Having a nice car doesn't make you a 'car person' though.

Pretty much this. And a dick in a nice car is still a dick.

Plenty of d!ckheads where I live who insist on racing between the speed humps, even though:

i) It's a 20mph limit, and
ii) Passes a primary school

Whenever I'm driving around, obeying the speed limits, I get some tool stuck up my ass trying to push me to go faster.

When I'm cycling I get aggressive, impatient drivers cutting me up and hand signals merely for daring to ride a bicycle on the roads.

Then there's Clarkson et al blowing things up and generally t!tting around on racetracks like a bunch of over-excited schoolchildren with a new toy...

I suspect such people are associated with 'car people' in the minds of the general public.

Yep, agree with this.

The guy in the Boxster S in a multi-storey in Reading 6 months ago who thought it was a good idea to do full bore 1st and 2nd gear acceleration runs down each straight bit on a busy Saturday with families with kids (including mine) everywhere was one such dick. My two were waiting to cross a pedestrian crossing area, when he hammered past them on wide open throttle just a metre or so away.

Thing is, had he done it somewhere more appropriate, or even at a more appropriate time, I'd have probably applauded him. As it was, I really, really wanted to extract him from his car and have a nice chat about what a pleb he was.
