Being a little impatient here but I am due some money in around 6 months and intend getting a couple of cars, a daily hack and a weekender.

Probably a dumb thought but with regard to the weekender, if I saw something right now that ticked all the boxes what are the chances a dealer would hold it for me for that amount of time?

Slim to zero.

You're selling your house. Do you mind taking it off the market for six months as I promise I will have the money then

Not going happen, I don't think. Most traders have very limited space, and they probably won't have the space to keep a car for you. The odd trader might be able to sort something out for you, but only if you pay in full up front, and even then it would probably end up with the car being stored in his mate's scrap metal yard or something. Plus, they have to deal with dreamers all day and so would probably worry about missing genuine customers by holding onto a car for you.

I'd also be worried about being scammed by the dealer, they're usually on the take for something. It wouldn't be inconceivable that you could pay your cash, then six months later when you go to collect the car

a) it's gone

b) you're met with a blank expression and a denial you've ever met

c) the dealer is gone

If you want it now, why don't you put down a deposit and get a bank loan with the best early repayment terms you can find/negotiate.

Then pay the loan off when you get your cash.

Did you not deny ever meeting them when they came to collect the car?

I held some kitchen units and work tops for over 2 years that had been paid in full , the customer eventually came back and arranged delivery , she had been divorced and had remarried another customer of ours by chance , she made it clear that husband number two wasn't to be made aware that she had chosen the kitchen with husband number one.

It's a strange old world.

I wouldn't trust a dealer with a deposit for a week let alone six months wink

Plenty of trustworthy dealers around, just like there are plenty of trustworthy customers

Probably best to be patient then. Its hard when I keep seeing some nice cars cropping up now that i will be able to pay for in cash in 6 months time.

Depends on the dealer - my father who deals in Classics has done and is currently holding a car.

Usually for a few months while they sell their old car or work up the courage to tell their wife

What's in it for the dealer?

It's worth asking, but a bit cheeky. I suppose if you had a long standing relationship with them - like my old man who bought Volvos from the same place for 20 odd years - then you may be in with a shout.

Like someone above said, get a loan if the car is that important to you. If you can prove you will be good for the cash in six minths, I'm sure your bank will help you out.

I have a friend who owns a business. A holiday park. He is flexible, but often gets people wanting things now and wanting to pay later. As he says, his business is a holiday park, he isn't a bank.

We've done it before, at a Vauxhall main stealer, customer paid thier deposit on the car, and didn't want to collect it for 3 months so we put it in storage and didn't start the finance till they collected.

Paid in full yes plus the costs that the compound would charge us which is £1 per car per day.
A holding deposit maximum would be a month.

With the risk being that the customer doesn't return to collect the car and pay the balance, did the deposit they left you cover the 3 months depreciation on the car?

Personally as a customer I can't see the point. Why put a deposit down on something so early? Buy when you need it - in 6 months time you'll be able to afford something with a newer reg plate, or the cars you were looking at will have 6 months depreciation behind them, making them cheaper.

Unless you're looking at something extermely rare there's no advantage to doing this. From your other post, it looks like you're looking for a 3 Series or a Focus.
