Do you think the aforementioned will the pinnacle of road car performance, (a question that was probably asked following the release of the F1 and Veyron) and if not how much bloody faster will the next generation of hyper car be and how will they manage it? I would hazard a guess at, yes though I reckon the gains will become more and more marginal.

IS a big jump up from the old F1, but still think there will be as bigger jump in 20 years time..

Veyron was a clean sheet design, only toyota could afford to build something similar, sure it will date, but it will always be a huge achievement. It would appear to go over a thousand horsepower suddenly turns into diminishing returns.

No, there will always be Hypercars and the manufacturers will always have to provide a little extra to tempt buyers.

Mclaren have only just got started in the road car business again, if they can pull off the P1 after just a few years, what is next ?

imo they'll have to resort to four driven wheels ala the 918. The rest of the gains will come from aero, tyre, battery and regeneration tech, and weight-saving materials.

I wonder if they'll ever make a diesel hybrid hypercar? It'd be hateful but technically very impressive.

I think the developments in electric tech will be the next big improvements to performance cars, lighter, higher capacity motors and batteries. Lots of scope for improvement there once the technology comes along. Instant torque, massive power..sure, why wouldn't there be further steps forward in performance to come?

I assume you want real world figs as opposed to manufacture claims so MotorTrend have some data

MotorTrend said:
The P1 took 2.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, 4.7 to 100, 6.3 to 120, and then passed the quarter mile in 9.8 seconds at 148.9 mph. Forget the Veyron. The P1 is the quickest production car tested in Motor Trend's 65-year history

Depends on what you mean, I suppose. As far as I know, none of the new crop can match the Veyron in terms of top speed. I can't see the power/lap-time wars ending any time soon, though.

Very rich people will always want to be able to tell the people they meet in the pub that they have the best car.

None of these were built for top speed...

Not that it makes any real difference but I noticed that Autocar's road test (published today and claimed to be the world's first independent test of the P1) did not achieve those numbers and actually ended up fractionally slower than the Veyron.

In fact, Motortrend's claimed production car record was, by their own admission, achieved in a pre-production prototype.

All of the McLaren P1 press cars are pre-production cars as they have sold all the production run. P1 OOV that Autocar used is a Mclaren press car. Have a watch of the Harris vid.

Interesting - Autocar must have known about the Motortrend times and presumably would have tested the P1 again and again to ensure that they really had got the most out of it.

What we have hit however is the practical limitation of road legal tyres. I can't see any massive performance increases in either acceleration, braking, or latG occuring in future, unless we get some "active" aero, by which i mean things like fans sucking cars down to the floor etc

And if the surface is different between the two locations you get different times, its not rocket science!!

I think you'll be proved wrong on that count. I think tyre tech will keep moving on as advances in nano-tech, chemisty, and computer simulation improves. In the not too distant future I suspect we'll see printed tyres which are bespoke to the model of the car. Computer controlled individual motors will also be able maintain the sweet spot between grip and no grip maximising the life of the tyre and offering maximum grip.
