Just look through your local ads, or filter Ebay by distance. I don't see any point travelling long distance for a budget car. A nice fiesta zetec s would be great if you could find one that hadn't suffered from rust
A standard focus zetec ? 1.6. Handle well, robust and will be a bit bigger and not have the boy racer image ?
Or go completely different bmw e36, e46 or even the the 3 series compact things they did?

completely missed the part where he said 1.4/1.6 engine!
if you must stick to it OP then any sort of Focus or Fiesta will suffice. not blisteringly quick by any means, but cheap to run cars. my first car was a 1.6 focus, i only planned to keep it for a year before going bigger engined. but kept it ages and loved every second of it. roomy inside and can swallow up all sorts!
Stay away from the french stuff!

I'm going to go left field and say:
Fiat punto 1.2 16v sporting.
Quite a light car, 6 speed box, Rev happy engine, Looks good (IMO of course) Comfortable, Sounds great, Very cheap buy and run.
They are even relatively quick! 80 bhp, 11 seconds to 60, 110mph. Good in gear acceleration too.
I must admit that I was sceptical before I drove one, but I was suitably impressed and had a lot of fun. (I owned a lancer evolution at the time)
