North South Divide for car prices

A friend of mine recently purchased an ex demo Audi from Leeds as he said that none of the local dealerships could get anywhere near the price he was offered. Now it may just be he got lucky and caught the Leeds dealer on the right day desperate to make a sale or is there any truth in the notion that it's cheaper to buy your car from oop North (or is this yet another urban myth)

Generally, Yes but go too far North and they tend to start getting expensive again in my experience.

There definitely are differences, I traveled up to Bedford for my Clio and it was at least £800 cheaper than anything else I found like for like.

I spend a lot of time in the Midlands (I live on the South Coast) and I've noticed cheap cars are generally even cheaper up there. i.e a £700 car in Sussex will be around £500 up there!.

Cars are more mobile than houses, so any price gaps will be smaller, because buyers and sellers can move stock around more readily to fill the gaps.

And local supply / oversupply can affect local prices. For example, Fords in Essex and Vauxhalls in Beds are rumoured to be cheaper than most places in the rest of Britain because local factories / distributors give them away on the cheap to local staff and families.
