Rubbish life on Continental sport contact 3's

Bought part worns 4mm a few months ago and have put on 3,500 miles they are now just above legal limit and will be changed tomorrow.


This to me is shocking wear rate - note I normally get mid to high 30k out of a set of Michelin pilot sport 3's but I always have bought brand new not used.

So is this wear rate normal on this brand or is it much higher once you go from 4mm down to legal limit?or is it the car is more weighty and wears them quicker? ( these are the rears it seems to be wearing 2 to 1 rear to front).

Yes, false economy. If you can't afford brand new tyres then just go for some cheapies.

Contis wear faster in my experience. Mitchellins have always been worth the extra. IMO

Its not that I put these on last time as the fronts had so much tread left the idea was I'd get all 4 down to the same level then change the 4 (fronts are now low too).

Also thinking seriously about changing cars - but have to change the rears (just MOTd and fully serviced too) so putting a new set on for c£700 Costco deal is great but I d never get that back

4mm tread left means the tyres had only 1/3 of their life remaining.

Tyre wear accelerates as the profile drops, the tyre isn´t performing as efficiently and slides around more (IME)

nothing wrong with part worns but buying at 4mm is pushing it to expect any kind of useful (i.e. long) life.

An update I've just ordered 4x Michelin PS2 255/35/R19 R01 £887.95 (less £100 voucher to spend in Costco) special order so will get them on later this week.
