Side window shattering

Anyone had this before? Minding my own business on the A12 yesterday at about 60mph as was turning off (with traf pol behind me) when my OSF door window literally shattered. Started off with a small hole then the glass fell out onto the road and into the car before I had time to get to a place of safety. Police followed me into an entrance to a field on the roundabout where I was turning off and told me to knock the glass into the verge and bushes so people don't injure themselves on it. Got the AA to come out and "Crash Wrap" the window as it was raining and drove to a scrapyard to pick up a new window.
Just dont understand how it happened!

Not necessarily, car glass is hard to break and your forward momentum will affect it's trajectory It's as-likely to be gravel or something else tho - esp if it hit in the corners (where laminated glass is weakest)
If you find this happening often tho - you probably have a contract against you ;0
p.s. I love how the Police's only input was "no litter" - "injure yourself on glass so others need not do so" - you should have reminded him that he was the one with a brush in his boot

Not sure what else you would expect them to do. They clearly knew nobody was injured, so off to deal with a law breaker, or something more serious.Your taxes at work...

Just been outside hoovering glass out the bottom of the door. Neighbours must think I'm mental! Hoovering doors out whatever next lol.
Didnt really expect the police to do much tbh - just grateful they didnt moan at me for showering the road with glass (not that I could do much about it apart from drive as gently as I could to stop it pouring out/in - would have been more dangerous to stop on a live carriageway.

The exact same thing happen in my mk4 golf, i was sat in service statoion with window slightly open whilst smoking a cigarette and when i pressed the button to put the windows back up and the window shattered instantly, the fuse/motor was the cause for this aswelTempered glass is highly stressed glass, the outside skin is "stretched" over the core (so to speak). This is caused by the cooling process. You can't cut tempered glass because of this, any cutting takes place before the glass is tempered,
A stonechip, a scratch, could cause immediate shattering, or could be OK for ages yet be a weak point that could give up at any time.
Think of tempered glass as a balloon if you prick it it does not slowly deflate it goes boom.
Tempered glass is harder and much stronger than normal glass (ridiculously so) but it has it's weaknesses.
The benefits are using thinner hence lighter glass that is stronger and hence more secure and also that shatters relatively safely into a zillion pieces when damaged.
I recently chucked two sizeable glass shelves from an old TV table into a skip full of metal junk from a height of one storey, the first I thought had a lucky landing when it did not break, the second landed on the first and neither of them broke, amazing.
