DVLA Wrong Model Year
Discussion

I did a quick check on the DVLA site of a car i'm thinking of buying and they have the model year wrong, only by 1 year though, is this necessarily a problem ? If I bought it would I need to change that or is it ok to leave as is ?
Thanks
Depends. Quite a few Jag X-type owners got cheaper VED after discovering the DVLA had wrong info about their emissions -Thanks

Don't think DVLA record model years - eg '71 Cuda etc so as the poster above asked - what do you mean by "model year" in this context?
Sounds as if they have the date of first reg - which may be correct if it was imported and not registered immediately, or if it (like many cars in those days) sat around a while before being registered.
DVLA doesn't hold date of manufacture for all older cars as I found when trying to renew my tax online on my '68. Due to them having a blank in their records, they couldn't work out what band it was in. Of course, it was beyond their logic-comprehension to realise that a car first reg in '68 couldn't have been made later than 73 and therefore must qualify for free tax.......
ETA - they have it correct now, but only after several months of complaining and them failing to meet every one of their published targets.

As I said, they don't have model year, but they may have date of manufacture (they didn't for mine).I suspect if you can offer them evidence of when it was made, they will update that date - not sure if it really matters unless it's something rare and valuable .........
ETA Date of manufacture is not the same as model year.

Yes they do, they list year of manafacture
For which they just take the year of first registration.Given that it's a 1970/71 car, and assuming it was originally registered in the UK, the details would have started off with a county council, then consolidated at Swansea in the mid '70s. The only date that was on record was the first reg date.
Are you, by any chance, originally American? "Model year" means precisely zip for any real or DVLA purpose here.

It's an American car, they have it down as first registration in 1976, which was presumably when it was imported to the UK
In which case, you have to prove when it was manufactured and then, assuming they accept that proof, apply for an age-related plate. that won't affect the date of UK rgistration. Ford do Marti reports but you may be able to get some proof from the US as to date of manufacture. What car is it?
Sorry I may not be explaining it properly
It is already on an aged related plate
Date of first registration - 1976
Year of Manufacture - 1971
But it is a 1970 model so presumably the year of manufacture should be 69 or 70
My main reason for starting the post was to just ask does that matter at all ? As I haven't bought the car yet but I didn't want the hassle to have to start changing things with DVLA, it doesn't bother me to leave as is but i'm just asking if it's ok to leave as is ?
I notice a lot of cars on there when I search for reg numbers of cars for sale are listed as the wrong colour also

It won't be a problem - it'd be tax free regardless, so they won't care. Ford can to you a build sheet if you like:It is already on an aged related plate

And you can probably decode the VIN if you're bothered. If having the right age related plate is an issue you can always buy a personalised one from the right year.
