OP is too vague! Why not an MX5? What will it mainly be used for? any particular requirements?

I would throw a Smart Roadster in the mix, but maybe you want a manual, or a bigger engine or something Jap etc etc

I'm currently looking at the same sort of thing for the same sort of money, and mk2 MR2s are top of my list, but then I've had one before and loved it. I'm also looking at RX7s, 200SXs, 944s and pretty much every RWD coupe in budget.

I hate convertibles but mk3 MR2s are hard to ignore as are MX5s.

I also keep looking at Integra Type Rs even though they are FWD and therefore entirely unacceptable.

Edit to add: loads of Yank stuff in this price bracket too, if a Mustang or something floats your boat. Whatever happened to 300, he'd have loved this thread and coud have easily turned it in to a 10 pager.

I agree, I just threw that one in as the odd ball.

The general consensus does seem to be 90's Japanese. Shame the Japanese market dropped all the desirable models at the turn of the century.

Gotta be something Japanese from the 90's at that sort of price. You'll get the most bang for your buck that way imo.
