The French equivalent of a DVLA V5 is the Carte Grise - except that it also gives a lot more detail like next MoT date etc.

Yesterday a suspension spring broke on my UK registered, RHD Merc, in a rural French town in Burgundy. My European recovery policy leapt into action and dealt with it all. Car was recovered to the local MB dealer. He is refusing to fix it as I don't have a carte grise. My command of French is ok - I can usually get my point across - plus I was supported by the French speaking recovery company. We'll have another go today and I'm sure common sense will prevail. Probably.

Living the dream in France... bless them. They do like their certificates and documentation over here.
