"I can't say it's beautiful, it's just interesting". That's the view of Jack Griffin, a Porsche 914/6 owner featured in this Petrolicious vid. Well, styling always comes up in the discussion of 914s at some point, so why not deal with it first?

Regardless, Jack is rather enamoured by his little Porsche. Purchased in 1976 as a six-year-old car and his first Porsche, Jack has kept hold of it ever since. That's more amazing given that he buys and sells plenty of cars, proud of the fact he's "probably had 20" 356s and a factory 911 RSR. Apparently nobody has ever wanted to buy the 914 from Jack so he's simply kept hold of it.
To see Jack so enthusiastic about his car after nearly 40 years is fantastic. He has a stunning racing story too that involves 914s and Sebring but we'll let Jack tell you that one.

I like them for being different, particularly the GT version, but then I like Alfa SZ too.
Probably handle better than the 911 (like the Boxster/ Cayman!) and if Porsche had put their weight properly behind it, it would probably have outperformed the 911.
I did a Porsche only track day at Bedford a few years ago and the quickest thing on track was a blue 914/6 driven by a mad Frenchman who blew everything else into the weeds.

Terrible value and mediocre performance: that's why no one has ever seen one - the 914/6 hardly sold.
Didn't VW shaft Porsche, leaving them to buy the bodies from Karmann at whatever price Karmann asked? Add the lowest spec 2.0l engine and you have a recipe for poor sales. They cost almost as much as a 911!

I've always quite liked the looks of the 914. It's very '70s and unimaginably petite from a 21st century perspective. Granted, it doesn't look much in full profile, but from other angles I think it's as attractive as most other early 70s 2 seaters.
The base 914 might have been a bit of a VW parts-bin special, the 914/6 was a proper baby Porsche. Following on from the 912, it paved the way for later 'entry level' Porkers such as the 944 and the Boxster. A few years later the 924 arrived, which begat the 944, and the rest as they say is history.
It also foreshadowed the parts-sharing that has become such an essential part of the modern motor industry, so you could even argue it was a pretty signficant car for VW as well. I know badge-engineering was going on long before this, but still, I think the 914 is an underrated car.

In 1970 Porsche entered a 914/6 GT in the Le Mans 24 Hours. It finished 6th overall and won its class. Not too shabby for a mash up.One of these for me please:

But seriously decent ones are around £10k and I reckon a good investment with 912 going through the roof who saw that coming 5 years old when they were £10k
There was a nice one fully sorted on eBay for £27k with 3.2 carrera engine etc £10k less and I would have seriously considered it !
There are a few ones with successful Scooby conversions in the states which look great on You tube if your not into originality

Ummm ....some are worth way more then 911's There is a 916 that was snapped up by automobile Atlanta ( 914 world HQ ) for around quater of a million
916 is 914 with 2.4 and 2.7 engine
Also there is a couple of rare 914-8 ...with flat 8 .....priceless
