Motorways: Get used to driving at 40mph - highways official
Discussion
Motorists must get used to driving at 40mph on the motorway, the civil servant in charge of Britain’s roads has said as he admitted the roads will get “slower and slower”.
Graham Dalton, the chief executive of the Highways Agency, said motorway speeds were still not fast enough at busy times and suggested there was now an unofficial target of 40mph.

If the government had stopped the ridiculous rises in house prices, then more people would have done without a car as they saved for an affordable house of their own, thus reducing the sheer number of cars on our roads. Just take a look at the number of cars now residing on our streets. Many houses now have 3,4 or even more cars rammed on the driveways after tea.
Not difficult to understand why younger people now spend their hand earned cash on cars, they simply cannot afford to move into their own property any longer.
I'll escape the "40MPH" target speed on the overcrowded Motorway network by moving North of the border !!

What I find depressing is I remember motorways at night being a paradise of safe high speed progress, now they aren't at all, and I'm only 30! Because of work I spend a lot of time travelling on the motorways when most people are asleep. Last night driving ACW M25 / M3 in the small hours I was reigned in to 50mph for such a great distance for non operative roadworks. Had me pondering spray on dirt for the plates...

You must have been going through those similar time as me I do the A217 junction - M3 junction a lot and last night it was ridiculous. This seems to be happening more and more over the last year. It's surprising to complete that bit of the journey without seeing a 40/50/60 sign flash up.
