If looked at the fantasy garage series, but what about one entitled " the only car you need to own", i'm sure there are cars that can cover all the needs one has, didn't BMW try to make it withe the X6, seen in many a supermarket carpark.

Golf GTI for me; safe, frugal, family friendly, classless yet very chuckable and easily fast enough for any given road.

Performance when you need it
Load lugging capacity
Towing capacity
Rear seat room
Good access height
Ground clearance
All the toys
Comfort (depends on wheel/tyre choice)

unless you are strictly limited by something like parking space, then i don't think any self respecting car enthusiast should ever be looking for an all rounder

4.0 V6 Supercharged so quick enough in traffic, sounds great, LSD on the rear for slidy fun, will seat 5 with luggage, will get you up and down the beach, will go proper off-road, smart enough to got to a client, rugged enough to last, tray is big enough for an proper Ikea run.

In my opinion the problem with car makers making coming up with an everything car is that they don't know which areas the individual customer is prepared to compromise.

Every car you can think of as an all rounder will, for another person by missing something they would want or need, for instance;

BMW 330d Estate = too diesel, too RWD
BMW X6 = too ugly, too big, too small (inside), probably too diesel or too thirsty....
Golf GTi = too small, too FWD, too much like a golf.

As car makers make a range of cars from which we can choose our compromises I would probably go for a previous gen Spec B Subaru Legacy.

Ford Fiesta 1.2 Zetec Petrol.

Good economy, good comfort, very nippy, does 70mph easily, drives nice, plenty of mod-cons, decent boot, spare wheel, cheap to insure, cheap to run, looks great. Cheap to fix and reliable. Fits in a garage too. And parking spaces.

For 99.99999% of cases, that really is all the car you need.

I have to declare ownership bias, but I can only agree with this. I have no idea (or indeed wish) what to replace mine with other than another.

Probably not the ultimate oracle but I'm sure Clarkson once described the TDV8 exactly as this thread title?

Only allowed one car the most sensible choice I guess would be a current Impreza STI or a 991 turbo with a roof rack.

To me the perfect all round car would be an M5 Touring, Fast, quiet, capable of swallowing a small village and the ability to keep up with Porcshe's

Not bothered about 4WD, get a set of proper winter tyres and forget about it.

Can't carry passengers in comfort, can't tow, no loadspace, too small, too slow, too ugly, too low, get's stuck in mud/snow
