How much for a Green Card?

Chaps,

Quickie. I'm taking my old 944 S2 abroad in a week or so's time. It's insured with a large insurance company, and I pay just over £250/year fully comp. I've spoken with my insurance company and they have told me I am covered third party only while abroad, and a Green Card will give me additional cover (comprehensive) for £42 for a week. They were distinctly vague about the details, claiming that repatriation of the car would be covered if it was damaged, then claiming that it wouldn't be, then changing their minds again and claiming that it would be, even if it was a total loss (which I find hard to believe).

Has anyone else bought a green card recently and, if so, how does this price compare with your experience? £42/week is over £2k/year, and that's only to get it from Third Party to Fully Comp - which seems very expensive.

(I await the replies of "It's only forty quid - man up and pay it".)

Full european cover on my policy. No extra fee at all. Gives me up to 90 days in Europe if I remember, but I always ring and let them know my travel plans all the same.

I thought green cards went out with the Arc.
My policy covers me up to 90 days, I thought this was pretty std.

Same here, I'm sure I haven't had to apply for one for the last 20-25 years or so.

It's only £40, most of that will be an admin fee, insurance for the rest of the year is cheap. Sometimes, dividing the premium by the number of days in a year does not give the full picture.

I think Minimum legally required cover is included now (has been for 30+ years) due to EU rules, but extending the fully comp nature of the policy can still cost - not saying folks are wrong, but those of you saying "it's included" might want to check it's the full cover....

european law ninety days no extra docs, just inform ins company of dates of travel.... leaving europe into somewhere like serbia although they are a member of the european insurers they insist on seeing a green card....uk insurers do not issue them,,,so the only way is to pay around 115 euros at the border for a month insurance for that country.

once in a foreign country you can only insure locally for the max ninety days before re-registering the car .

european breakdown cover is a must... re-patriate the car, the logistics taken care of while you relax in the hotel waiting for a loan car...cheap unless your vehicle is over 17 years old
