Just had a Toyota Yaris 1.3 as a hire car for the last couple of days and what a great little car it was, yet they never seem to get rave reviews compared to class rivals such as the fiesta and polo.
Having driven all three now id take the yaris all day long, great engine and gearbox, neat interior design and unoffensive styling (better than the new fiesta to my eyes). No doubt it would be more reliable long term than the fiesta and polo with toyota's reliability records.

you must have missed out on all the recalls they have been having over the past few years, the reason the car in front was a toyota was mainly due to the accelerator pedal getting stuck down

I think picking on toyota over the recalls is a bit off-centre...many people have experienced faults with other cars that the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge or makes life difficult despite some faults being quite common. Toyota are looking back 10 years in some cases and honouring work on faults that could never have been found through normal product development
Anyway, my brother had a yaris T-sport and loved it. He put on 40,000 miles in 3 years of ownership and nothing ever went wrong.
My old man rates the Aygo cars, and my friend (who worked for lexus) enjoyed the IQ, despite having access to some of Lexus's bigger cars

drove one for 3 months, worst car I have ever owned by a long way.
I have owned a Mk1 Yaris and a 2008 version. For recalls there has never been one for the gas pedal sticking down, the Mk1 had one for rear brakes for which they took it in and gave me a bottle of bubbly to make up for.
The l2008 Yaris had a recall on a window switch that might cause issues if something was sprayed onto it that was not right. Needless to say i didn't get it done.
My first Yaris did 90 000 miles driving into central London every day before the clutch needed replacing. Pretty epic. This current Yaris is only on 65 000 miles but has done over 150 laps at Brands Hatch last year on track days just to give it some abuse. And is my normal drive to work. I did need to replace the front pads and discs though at the end of the year.
My best recorded fuel economy?

People laugh at these small Toyota's just down to the general consensus I feel.
I have had 2 light bulbs blown. One of them was done for free at Halfords... top man !
So, in summary, the original poster was right to acclaim this unsung hero of the A to B fold.
