Car Parts - that survive the orginal car on other designs...

I am talking about bits - trim and stuff rather than engines - used on one car and used on other models.

The 1984 Rover 200 - based on a square Honda. The door handles were carried over into the new 200 - the R8 and into the "Bubble" 200/25.

Or so it seems.

The side repeaters on a 1982 Volvo 760 survived on new Volvos until 2005 ish.

The Morris Marina door handle, not used on the Ital, but used by Lotus on most of their cars and the 4 door Range Rover.

Citroen CX door mirrors used on French cars called Venturis.

The washer bottle lid from a Rover 75 fits the present generation Freelander.

I think Metro mirrors were used on MGF and TF as well as Lotus and the VX 220.

I wonder what the oldest bit of kit survives today on a current model?

I've said this before and I'll say it again - the more Toyota there is in a Lotus, the better the car.

I'm not just talking engines/transmissions. Back in the day there was quite a close relationship between the two companies. The 4-seat and rather good "Lotus Excel" was essentially a Toyota-ified version of the previous Lotus Éclat. At the same time various Toyota bits found their way onto Esprit. IIRC the rear lights of the Stevens Esprit redesign were pure Toyota (the previous lamps having been Rover - cleverly used correct-way-up on Esprit and upside-down on Excel).

The original LR Disco was full of old Leyland parts bin stuff - Marina door handles, Maestro van rear lights, Metro column stalks and loads more.

The dash vents from the Ferrari F40 live on in the Lotus Elise S1 (and can also be found in an Alfa 33). The aforementioned Elise also has a steering column, stalks and ignition lock from the Vauxhall Nova.

The bonnet catch from many a humble VW is fitted to the Bugatti Veyron...but I guess that's no surprise with it being a big VW. It probably uses a million other shared parts too.

The cost saving comes from tooling and ED&T. Which are not insubstational.

Volvo seatbases and switches on Freelander 2.

BMW E38 pedals, electric seat switches and fag lighter in L322 Range Rover - they used to share keys up until 2007MY.

I swear the interior door handles on the DB7 are the same as those in an MX5? At least very similar.

Rx7 FD3S reverse light/reflector units are on the Koenigsegg CCX / others

......almost deserve a dedicated thread: TVR Griffiths/Chimeras with funky O-ring embellishment, Lotus Esprit, Astons Virage and Vanquish, Jag XJ220, Marcoses and many lower volume specials...the significant factor in it's adaptability appears to be the near vertical mount allowing fitting through door tops rather than window sides. It certainly wasn't an inherent strength that saw this part have a longer and more exotic life...though being an œ part on the CX is plenty cool enough already....

mk3/4 escort vents too
and I believe nobles use mk.3 escort handles and maybe some other bits

Invicta S1 uses VW Passat tail lights.
Jaguar XJ220 uses Rover 200 tail lights and Citroen CX wing mirrors.
Aston Martin Virage uses VW Scirocco tail lights.
Diablo has headlights from Nissan 300ZX.
McLaren F1 has Corrado mirrors.
Aston DBS has Volvo V70 mirrors.

Soft-top Land Rover Defenders still use the same canvas cleats as the 1948 Series 1. Its the only part that has survived 65 years of production completely unchanged

Rear lights on the 'London' Fairway Taxi, built until at least the mid 90's, came from the Austin/Morris 1100/1300, Wolseley, MG & probably a few other Leyland variants. The boot lock was from a Mini Countryman or Van too.

Think rear lights on the latest cabs could well be identical too!

The Metrocab used headlights, front indicators, radiator grille & possibly the bonnet of Ford's 81 'facelift' Granada & rear lights from the original FWD Escort estate, Mk3? Also the dash pod in these was from the original Discovery.

Early Jaguar XF used same door mirrors as the 2006 MY (facelift) Volvo V70.

Bentley Arnage used BMW heater controls.

Think I need to get a life ASAP!!!
