Evoque or Mercedes GLA?

My wife has narrowed her choice down to the above 2 cars, either an Evoque SD4 Dynamic 9sp auto with Pano roof or the new mercedes GLA 220cdi AMG line.
The evoque is 40k including the £1500 manufacturer contribution and via drive the deal etc we can get this down to roughly 37k. This spec includes perforated Oxford leather, xenons, nav, etc - pretty much most of the toys you could want.
The GLA specs out just over 34k with memory, night and premium plus packages, giving us everything the Evoque has bar full leather (we like the AMG suede like trim) but with it being so new I think discounts are going to be hard to come by.
We've driven both, the GLA has a really nice ride with a hint of firmness from the AMG suspension and is a nice place to be. The Evoque is roomier and the cabin has a classier feel. Not tried the 9sp yet as we've only driven the manual (have a test in the auto booked next week) but we're really stuch as to which to choose. It'll be a long term car (5-6 years is our average time to keep) so needs to be something that will last.
How do people find build quality, mechanics, electrics etc fare now in modern Mercs and JLR cars?
I'm aware I'll get a load of opinions about looks/image but would be interested in genuine thoughts from people that have owned or driven both.

Really? Have you seen how Evoque prices are holding now?The thing with the Evoque is that it has 'Range Rover' tattooed on the front and back of the car, meaning it will always be more desirable to a lot of people than a car with a seemingly random grouping of three letters - regardless of how it performs in the real world. Until the desirability of the Range Rover brand lessens, the Evoque is unlikely to lose much of its current appeal (and therefore value) as it is seen as an affordable step into the Range Rover brand for a lot of people who wouldn't be able to stomach the costs associated with that of a Range Rover or a Range Rover Sport.
Can't help with the Merc, but we've got an Evoque as our family car and think its awesome.
It's done about 25,000 miles now and had it just over 2 years. Nothing has fallen off. Rear brakes will be due end of the year, as will tyres. A couple of very minor niggles which have been resolved (my running report here if you are interested).
In terms of residuals, they are still fetching about £25k looking at the classifieds, so its a £7k drop, or about £3-3.5k per year (for ours at least).
All in all, I'm extremely happy with mine and would recommend it. We've got a manual one, but had the 9 speed auto as a courtesy car and the missus loved it. That's the only car I'd change it for, otherwise ours will be a long term keeper.

Thanks for that! I believe the new 9sp auto has some real world figures in the early 40s (claimed 49 combined) so hopefully that will be true. I do know a couple of people with the A220 Cdi (same engine as in the GLA) and they achieve mid 50s with not too much trouble so mpg is a bit of a consideration. Our current Leon FR Tdi gets real world around 42-44 and we don't really want to go less.
We have an extended test drive from Saturday eve until Monday morning booked next week in the Evoque auto which will really help, followed the next day by good couple of hours in the GLA - nothing like some direct back to back testing
It'll definitely be one of the 2 but it's a tough choice and a lot of money to spend hence some real world opinions and thoughts will help greatly.
