911 With VIN Plates Removed - Why?

I was looking on eBay and saw this:

A 996 911 with the VIN plates removed sometime in its life and it now has a Q plate. The owner has supposedly been reassured the car isn't stolen or cloned, but I can't understand why anyone would remove the VIN plates from a 911 especially as a Q plate is going to de-value it massively.
Any suggestions on why?

More to the point: if it's possible to get it back onto age related plate as easily as the owner says it is, then why not do it and make the whole Q-plate stigma/devaluation issue go away?Probably stolen, identity removed and re-sold, and then recovered and lost its identity. Just because he said the police werent aware that it's been subject to a theft, doesnt mean it hasnt.....after all it has no identity, so the theft of the original car (with VIN plates!) wouldnt be linked to it now.
Edited to add: surprised it reached £8800, when there are genuine/unmodified ones without the dodgy history for a similar amount.

Very flash looking, inexpensive motor. Get that and 99% of people wouldn't have a clue that it's actually a bag of nails with a seriously questionable history, they'll just think you've got a flash Porsche.

As I thought - no logical reason for the VIN to be removed.
I reckon if Porsche will ID it for the purpose of putting the VIN plates back on it then the seller is too scared because he knows it'll flag as stolen.
It quite surprising that you can get a potentially stolen car put on Q plate and drive it around undetected!!!

If you are concerned about the Q plate and would like it removed, the correct procedure is to go contact a Porsche dealer & have them identify it by one of the hidden chassis codes, something I have not had time to arrange but I can confirm they do do it for a price.
doing this increases its value, so it was that easy / possible then any sane person would have done it already

Most modern cars have chassis ID readable via the OBDII port also engraved in hidden places, info on where they are located is often not readily available to average Joe for the obvious reasons Some misinformation on this thread.

No doubt its been recovered at some point by the police sans ID and has then been correctly re registered on a Q plate as a car with its original ID number removed and probably now carrying a DVLA "SABTVRO" unique VIN number.
Why the seller has not gone to Porsche though and tried to find the original VIN, who knows, maybe he has and the savvy previous thief removed the lot inc the hidden ones, I bet a quick google will tell you where they are, or a weekend inside would reveal everything you need to know anyway.

A friend of mine worked for one of the large racetrack companies that offers various different cars on track. They had a whole batch of Lotus elise a good few years back that they ran as track cars that were supplied directly to them by Lotus. Each one was supplied without a VIN number as they didn't want the registered back on the road again. I was offered one for sale at a huge knockdown price but in reality could only be used as a track car - needless to say I didn't take them up on the offer. It is possible I guess that this car has come from the same background although in fairness is more likely to be stolen or cloned as everyone else has suggested - my advice run as fast as you can in the opposite direction.

He got proof of identity from Renault but they wouldn't provide proof of age so that's registered on a Q plate.
