Last Saturday I was on the final day of a 10 day driving holiday on Spain's magnificent, empty, A-roads.
Our tour organiser informed us of a car meet that we were welcome to join. I assumed that we would park up and chat with the Spanish owners for an hour or two.
I was wrong, very wrong.
We were supposed to meet at 1:30, but I didn't get there till ten past two.
I pulled into the lay-by where we were due to meet, but the cars were moving. Within 30 seconds I was waved out the far end of the lay-by b someone clearly indicating "faster, faster". So I floored it.
What followed was absolutely mental. I found myself in a group of 145 "supercars" on a 27 mile high speed hoon. Speeds through the villages were often 75mph, where hundreds of locals had turned out for the spectacle. I didn't look at the speed between towns, probably because I needed all my senses just to drive. I am told that we hit speeds of over 150.
I've done track days at Goodwood and Silverstone. I've done a couple of Sunday morning runs with Pistonheads, but this crowd were totally, utterly bonkers.
It turns out that this is an annual event, and it involves 4 such runs every year, spread over two days (Friday and Saturday). I'm already booked in for next year. They make foreigners especially welcome as it gives the festival an "International" feel.
