Hi All,

Posting on behalf of my brother who had a car stolen 10 days ago. The car has been recovered and is currently awaiting for forensics.

The car apparently has no damage. We can't work out what to do from here - let the insurance deal with it (pay the excess and they pay the recovery fees etc) or pay the fees personally and not involve the insurance. We aren't sure at what point the car becomes stolen recovered? There doesn't seem any point doing personally only to find the car has been devalued on future trade in due to SR status.

Any help appreciated! What is the most efficient path forward?

Just to update this - apparently my brother has now spoken to forensics and the car is mint. It just has no identity! VIN numbers removed, no plates, false docs the works. Sounds like it was well on its way to being ringed. Complicates the insurance now but I think my brother is going to push for a payout.

Good news is that they have arrested someone! Hopefully they can unpick the network and bang a few scrotes up.

Car was stolen from South Manchester and recovered from Rochdale.

I hope it's not a silly question, but if it had no identity, how do they know it was his?

I guess its the same with burned out cars, a case of realistic / percentage chance of it been the right car.
Simple things like you know it had a dint it say the door which is still identifiable, scuff on wheel etc, marks on interior parts, or even if you know parts added to the car that where not standard.
