Does anyone know how the ANPR tax disc plans will cope with foreign, Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man registered cars?

Exactly the same as they do now. The only changes with tax discs are that you won't need a piece of round paper in the windscreen, and you'll be able to pay for your 12mo disc by monthly DD. No more than that.

I don't quite get this, tax discs are being abolished in the UK.

No UK ANPR can handle foreign registered cars anyway.

Foreign-registered cars aren't taxable in the UK, so no change I wouldn't have thought!

I think he means in terms of getting a tug from the police.

20 odd years ago, I knew two guys. One ad a Guensey plate which he changed to a UK plate because cops saw it as a UK looking plate but with 9999 or whatever and a GBG logo on it.

There was another bloke I knew had bother with his Cyprus plated car which looked like a UK private reg XL654 or something. He kept getting pulled fr no tax disc.

Ah I see - now you mention it I saw a Lexus the other day with UK style plates on some bizarre number (something like 3 numbers, a letter and three more numbers), it was RHD so I was a bit confused!

Was the middle letter a D? They're diplomatic vehicles, often seen in London.

Having done a few miles in the UK and France on my Guernsey plates I've never had any issues. I do always take my logbook and driving licence with me just in case though.

For the record, our number plates are simply up to 5 digits and the States of Guernsey recently started releasing plates with leading 0's, such as 0220. I don't know if they've issued 007 yet! We are also completely separate from the UK regarding tax matters so as we don't have to pay any VED here we couldn't be prosecuted for pinging on an ANPR anyway.

D is diplomats, X is non-diplomatic staff.

Maybe a little more than that - once they really decide how the transfer of road tax will happen (or not) when a car is sold.

Last I heard there will be no transfer, so presumably a compulsory "refund" situation.

Correct, the disc is cancelled when you sell the car.

Every used car purchased after 1st October needs to have a new VED payment.

^^^ And the refund will (as reported) be issued automatically when the "change of RK" 'document' is processed by DVLA.

PS there will (also as reported) be 14 days' grace for the new owner (RK) to purchase VED.

Interesting. I'd not seen that.

So if you buy a car within the last two weeks of a month, it'll be perfectly cool and legit to tax from the start of the following month? Or will you be required to tax from the purchase date?

Presumably you'll be assumed to be taxing it from the date of change of keeper on the V5 - as filled in by both the seller and signed by the purchaser.

The question in my mind is this - refunds are done on complete months - so the tax will still be "paid for" up to the end of the month in which the change of keeper takes place - but will the new keeper be expected to pay for that (part-)month too? The DVLA get a double whammy if that's the case.
