Hey, I could use some advice from somebody who actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to diesels, which is not me!

I commute close to 90 miles per day, along with weekend trips up to my girlfriends who lives 35 miles away currently. I currently drive a 1.4L Seat Ibiza (85). It's served me decent enough, but I'm running up a massive bill travelling to and from each week etc, and think I would benefit from a Diesel more so.

I've taken a Mazda3 2.2d (185bhp variation), and must say I thought it drove really well. It was comfortable, roomy and most importantly pretty powerful. Quick off the mark and handled well enough I really enjoyed it.

However, I don't want to take the first thing that comes to me. In this sort of class, does anybody have any recommendations? Or any advice on what to look out for, or the most important features? I did read on here earlier, about recurring issues with the DPF on the Mazda3, but I'm sure giving it at least 90 miles a day in travel would sort that out..

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Sorry, I should have mentioned I'm 21. Had license 2 1/2 years, I already thought of that but the insurance is close to 2000. I'd not want to pay that much if I could help it.

I have been driving a Volvo V60 with the 2.4 litre 5 cylinder engine for almost 2 years and now it's time for a change I'm coming round to the conclusion that I might keep it. It pulls like a train, can beat hot hatches from the lights averages 37mpg with the auto box and sounds good as well. You might want to look at the V40 if you want a hatch and it might be worth trying a 2.0 litre as I understand that they are 5 pot engines as well

BMW 123D ?
BMW 120D ?

Audi 3.0 D

NO idea how much they will cost to insure, Though I'm guessing all turbo diesels will be expensive to insure if under 25.

Well to be honest it varies massively. I can get an 09 320d for less than 1000 p/a, and the 2.2 mazda is >1000 too so. I'm willing to try anything, I've got time to look around as I won't be buying for a couple of months yet.

My son has a 120D M Sport. Got it insured in his own name when he was 19.

180ish BHP, so nippy, if not "quick".

Options around remapping to 235BHP if you so desired.

Seat Leon FR.
The Diesel version obviously.
170BHP is enough in a smallish car.

Ibiza 2.0 TDI FR

Got one, love it. Easy 55 mpg and fairly cheap to insure.

An Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTDm, has 175HP and plenty of perceived shove for sir.

Combined with a lovely 5 pot burble, no DPF, sub 45MPG and a 6 speed gearbox they are a fairly good package (just buy a good one).

Oh and did I mention they can be remapped very well indeed.

Who me ?

How about any of the VAG 1.4TDI. Bit less powerful than at present ( about 10), but the turbo makes you believe otherwise. Kind on the insurance side and Not bad MPG. I've got the Skoda 04 version and it always seems to return 50mpg town/motorway /country. I've always wondered what it would be like mapped to 100 ( with a change of front brake setup ,of course). For the poo pooers, that's 30 less than a Vrs, but on a far lighter engine, and I'd say easier on the pocket insurance wise than a vrs or it's Seat/Polo equivalent.

Mine has now done 262k and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
(Not so with Mrs D however, but there are worse ways for her to spend a morning than at a Speed Awareness Course!).

I was going to say 40d engine, but that wont work with insurance.

The best engine for your money is the 20d engine. 180bhp in later guise and easily the best engine in its class for both performance and economy.

Not sure which age / price bracket you are looking into, but the old VW polo 130 1.9 tdi is a quick and frugal little car. Same as the skoda fabia vrs.

Any BMW 2.0d, AmD remap will see ~220 bhp and still 55 mpg on the motorway. Haven't been in a better 2.0 diesel (yet)
