Changing taxation class - Post Office?

Hi all

Mrs PBF's new banger's tax needs changing - it runs out end of May anyway but regardless of that, it's shown as DISABLED class on the tax disc/V5. (The V5's been sent off by the seller but we have the usual green slip).

So we need to a) buy a tax disc & b) change the taxation status. (though the order would have to be the other way round wouldn't it? )

Does anyone know if that can be done at a Post Office these days or do I need to call into the nearest DVLA office?

DVLA offices all closed now so its send off to Swansea
I don't think the post office can change just same for same!

Yes it's a pita I bought an ex-motability corsa via BCA years ago and spent hours in the DVla offices..And as above they're closed now!

Mine was an ex-mobility car (Evo IX, which offers some mobility indeed!) which I had to change the tax on. You can apparently do it at a regular post office if you have all the relevant paperwork to hand ( they don't necessarily have access to the database to check stuff like MOT, etc.). I didn't have the MOT certificate (managed to leave it at the seller's house after seeing it), so had to do it at a DVLA office.

It's fairly straight forward really. Even when they can't figure out what tax band a kind of imported 2006 Evo with no emissions figures on the log book belongs in.

I recently changed a car from PLG to Historic. First visit to the PO they said they couldn't do it. I printed the relevant page from the DVLA website and returned to the PO. Again they said they couldn't do it so I showed them the DVLA regs. The PO clerk then checks and says they can. So the PO staff need educating on what they can do.

You need to check on the DVLA site if PO can change Disabled class.

How the flying f*** does an evo 9 come to be a motobily car? What is this country coming to!

AFAIK a car doesn't have to a motability car to be taxed as 'disabled', just used by a person who qualifies. So if someone with a disability buys a car with their own cash then, subject to meeting the requirements, it can be taxed as 'disabled'. So don't worry, I don't expect us 'taxpayers' directly funded an Evo ;-)

OP - I did exactly what you're needing to do at my local post office. They'll provide a new tax disc showing the correct new class and send the documents to the DVLA who will make the necessary changes and you'll receive a new V5C.

Disabked tax class can be applied to any vehicle kept and used by or on behalf of a qualifying persion.

Motability is a lease scheme, eligible individuals ( recipients of higher level mobility component of DLA or PIP who are by definition unable or virtually unable to walk a short distance ) pay a monthly lease equal to their mobility component, until the frothers got a hold if the wrong end of the 'free cars cos you've got a naughty kid ' bullst manufacturers offered many cars through the scheme, if the commercial lease rate would be higher than the standard motability lease the vehicle attracted an 'advanced payment' which is a payment to cover that difference , this is NOT government funded although there is discretionary funding through mobility where there is a clinical or good welfare reason ( e.g. needs a people carrier because of pre disability family size or where someone needs a drive from chair WAV).

Yes the taxation class can be changed from disabled to p car at your post office ONLY when applying for the road fund licence. It cannot be changed any other way, for example if you want to change ownership or vehicle details and also it cannot be changed if you SORN the car.......
