Very heavy rain on the M62 over the Pennines on Sunday afternoon. Everyone driving fine other than one guy in a grey MX-5 with no lights on, driving about a car length from the rear of my car at 70mph in the middle lane. Outside lane was empty but he wasn't interested in overtaking, not even when I dropped back to 60mph.

yes no one gets out the outside lane, and drives too fast and too close, in the rain, and there usually is 1 person who gets it wrong and f
ks it up for everyone by having an accident, but they generally are able to cram in about 2-3x the amount of traffic onto the same roads and still get places as quickly or quicker.

Bank holiday driving is always absolutely dreadful - one reason that I just stay at home or go walking near home. Roads are swamped with ditherers and the motorways are awful; they're running with about half the traffic that they do in commuter peak times yet about 20mph slower.
I'm always mystified at how much worse the congestion is for an equivalent level of traffic density. Lane merges are the best: oh, the anger!
Rode from Ventnor on the Isle of Wight back to St Neots and due to the horrid weather decided to stick to motorways. M275 > M27 > M3 > M25 > A1(M) and for the majority of the time in lane 1, we were by far the quickest vehicles and we weren't breaking any speed limits, either. The lane discipline was absolutely shocking.
Drove to Edinburgh from Cambridgeshire and back over the weekend. Friday to pick up the MIL in Derbyshire Peak District then on to Edinburgh on Saturday returning yesterday in one go having dropped MIL back in Peak District. The amount of congestion caused by not so much, but badly driven, vehicles was noticeable - lane discipline was terrible!
Major incident was joining the A74(M) from M6 going north on Saturday. Light traffic after Lake District and everyone popping along nicely until rounding a sweeping bend to see a 'Safety Camera Partnership' van atop a bridge. The VW Golf that had just overtaken me at, I would estimate 80-85 mph, pulled into the centre lane in front of me (yes I was overtaking vehicles in the inside lane at the time) and applied full anchors down to about 50mph! Was quite an 'exciting' moment and, luckily, no contact!

At the roundabout after leaving the M4 to join the A34 going south a Picasso cut very close across in front of me to go from lane 1 to 3. On leaving the roundabout it then cut across me to go from lane 3 (marked M4 only) to lane 1 to go into the services! The BMW X5 in lane 1 was most unhappy - much light flashing and horn blowing.
On my return travelling north on the A34 a BMW was driving in the outside lane at speeds varying from 50 to 70 but refusing to pull over for faster traffic - kept this up for more than 10 miles and even held up an artic at one point. When I finally got past the driver grinned at me! I can only assume that it was some kind of game to him.

Definitely more dithering and brake dabbing going on. I'm afraid my own standard of driving dropped at one point. Frustrated after being in a precession of cars for several miles on an A road, when an overtaking opportunity came up I went for it. It was a bit ambitious of me to pass the whole line, and I think I may have scared the front car and an oncoming one which arrived just in the last stages of the pass.
That coupled with the fact it was really pissing it down (the A5 in the mountains in North Wales), meant I did feel like a right pillock. So yes, some terrible bank holiday driving...

I drove from Scotland to Derbyshire yesterday. Apart from the service areas I stopped at being busier than usual it was just like any other drive down the A1/A1M.
Annoying then! Specially when people must think the 50mph limit in roadworks is actually 40.
