£100K Garage: Richard Galloway

Why I chose it: First things first, a family friendly load-lugger. The fact that it's an old-school V8 wrapped up in a very practical, usable, reliable, and modern package means that I get a couple of categories of car off my list in one hit. As soon as PistonHeads came up with the 100K challenge, I started mentally raiding the classifieds and needless to say I went through several drafts before I landed up with this list of entertaining toys. As much as I'm loathe to deny access to the likes of a Porsche Cayman or Lotus Evora, I just had to have a proper V8! And because others on this list are 'must-haves', I had to draw the line somewhere...

Why I chose it: My 'family friendly' choice above would suggest that I have no care for the planet whatsoever, but I'm not all bad. So I've added this to my list as it's a cracking little car (I used to own one), and it's ideal for popping down to the shops via your favourite twisty B-Road. I've also had the pleasure of embarrassing more than one BMW owner in it too. And yes, they're actually relatively spacious so the kids could come along too if you don't feel in a V8 frame of mind.

Despite having never owned one, Caterhams are most definitely in my blood. My father owned three Lotus 7s, a Caterham 7, and a Caterham 21 in his time, and his father owned an original Lotus Elan. So this was the first car on my list, but it was really just a question of which one... I drove the Caterham 21 for a while and with a 140hp 1.6 K Series engine and more weight to pull around than a 7, it seemed just a little shy on power for British B-roads. So I think that an R300/Supersport R seems like the perfect beast for road and track. 160bhp and just over half a ton? I'll take that!

Why I chose it: Whilst you have to be wary of personal projects, this looks like an absolute belter! Short of having an original BDA Escort, having a VTEC from a Honda S2000 is surely the next best thing (or possibly even better?). As soon as I saw this ad I started YouTubing similar projects and they just sound awesome, and look like more fun than you could possibly hope to have a modern day coupe. This could really challenge the Caterham for putting a smile on your face so I'd be in there like a shot to take it off his hands.

Why I chose it: I owned a Mk1 and loved it and this makes for a more practical alternative to the Caterham when I'm not in the mood for thrashing. Fun, exploitable, reliable and totally classless. A great sports car for when you want to have fun and stay under the radar at the same time.

I'll spend the last 665 on a trailer so I can take two cars to a track day instead of one! (With the Panda substitution there's now a little more in that trailer fund).
Panda 100HP - Nope you've lost me here. I'm sure it's a fun little motor for the money but you don't buy one if you've got this sort of budget do you? Not for me, each to their own, etc.
Caterham 7 R300 - The 100k garage has to have one really, 160 horse in a 7 would do me nicely too.
Mk2 Escort VTEC - A nice classic/retro is desirable for sure. Escort's are very cool, but they are pricey for what they are IMO. Also, a modern engine in one isn't for me, a nice period modified engine on carb's would be more fitting.
MX5 MK3 - Can't really argue with an MX5 can I, but I wouldn't do 12k on one, a mk1 in excellent condition and with a few choice mod's perhaps...
I suspect for many people this would be their fantasy 100k garage.

The Panda 100bhp, off the top of my head, that's the 4x4?
I think I would have an old school GTI in the guise of the Peugeot 309, not normally picked because the 205 was more popular but it handled better and the performance difference was minimal.
Lotus Cortina, I just really like these cars, 1600cc and 107bhp back in the 60's was a good effort.
The hard choice for me would be a MK1 or a MK2 Escort, both have that charm that you would want in a car and you have the Rally breeding there also.
22B - sports car that wont depreciate.
Lexus - old LS to waft around. Utterly reliable, and at 3-5k cant go wrong value wise for a few years.
Yamaha R1 - get your inner power ranger freak on.
Any scooter - good to have a monkey bike.
So far, about 30k spent. Take the other 70k and invest it. Best bet, get a BTL, then with the positive cash flow, get a PCP for something like a new c63. 5 years down the track, you'll be way out in front.
