Or, 5-cylinder Volvo of some sort (850?). I remember following an old 850 estate into a multi-story car park, and it sounded epic even at/near idle.

Haha I've never heard that one! unfortunately the 2.5 V6 in the ZS doesn't really munch through HGs like the 4 cylinder K series! Pretty robust lumps!

Some nice suggestions on here, particularly the ZS as a bit of an unsung hero. I'm sure I also stumbled across a ZT V8 at this sort of money a couple of months back.

Don't think we've had other V8 suggestions yet though and there are a few in budget. An E34 or E39 540i could be had with manual 6 speed boxes. Pretty muted as standard but not much effort to unleash the noise...

On its day an Alfa Romeo Alfasud was unbeatable. My dad had one, it was a 1.4 if I remember rightly, but it sounded and drove like a proper Italian car should. It rusted like one too.
