v5 doc reference number
Discussion
It's one of 2 options to look MOT history online, the other being the test number for the last MOT.

Unsure of the implications of sharing it. I've asked for either of these numbers for almost every car I've been interested in buying, and have never been refused. I can't see what the harm would be with providing the MOT test no. instead, if indeed the MOT history check is the reason for the request?
But, having said that, await a more informed opinion!

Same here - When looking at cars I always ask for:
(1) Registration Number and ask whether a UK registered car from new
(2) Date of registration
(3) VIN
(4) V5 reference number (there are 2 numbers (one in top corner in a circle and one further down))
(5) Colour noted on V5 - (I always stay away from wraps and colour changes)
(6) MOT reference number if applicable
