Fiat 500s - How old?

I was onver in Itlay a couple weeks ago and was amazed by the number original Fiat 500's (and variants) still on the road, most looking like they're in quite good nick. Set me wondering, when did Fiat stop making these? It feels like ages ago. Can't recall the last time I saw one over here that wasn't obvioulsy an enthusiast's car.

Any one else picked up on this kind of thing for other run of the mill cars on their travels?

That does surprise me as everything I've ever heard about Italy says that they treat cars like dodgems over there... or is that more a problem in the bigger cities?
