I can't answer as I don't have kids. My mate's dad had a really nice TR4A in the garage that got very little use. I couldn't believe it when he offered to let his son use it as his own, and he turned him down as he'd be embarrassed driving an 'old car'.

I have no kids but luckily my dad always let me drive his sportscars, even if when I was 18. 15 years later we exchange cars and we even go out together for a drive sometimes, chasing ourselves in the hills. What it is "annoying" is that he still has more talent than me behind the wheel despite 27 years more to carry around.
Yes. My old man has always let me drive all of his cars.
I was driving his BMW 730 a few weeks after passing my test (on a fleet policy with no age restrictions in those days).
In recent years several Ferraris and Bentleys. He's also got a Mazda MX5 which I borrow occassionally for a quick blat around the Brecon Beacons.

I had a (mint) MX5 MK1 and my son refused to drive it. When we were working on his car, we needed a bit from the factors and he HAD to drive the Mazda... he put a hoody on and sunglasses so no one would recognise him, ungrateful little git!
Oh, he's got an R34 GTR and he won't let me loose in that either!

I grew up with my Dad letting me drive his cars from the age of about 8 IIRC
He would take me to the beach and let me drive the car, on my own, wasnt a super car though, Rover 3500 V8S and then when I was older I washed his car every Saturday and he would let me reverse the car off the drive and up and down the close where we lived. It was very early in the morning when I did this.
Now I let my boys drive my cars, my youngest is 2 and will sit on my knee and drive, and on Monday drove on a private road from the beach on my knee....

I remember being let loose in my Dad's brand new Audi A4 3.0 TDI when I was 17 and the fastest thing I had driven until then was my 1.6 Astra, what a day that was!

I usually find it's quite easy to spot the handy drivers, just ask questions; what's throttle steer, lift off, weight transfer etc.
Watch them in their own car - if they're smooth and progressive, or stabby and rough.
