Tyre noise

I bought an Ignis Sport last week...

There is a loud hum that sounds like a flat tyre/really noisy tread shuffle which starts to get irritating at around 30mph and just gets louder the faster I go.

In a straight line it's constant, you can switch off and coast in neutral- it's still there, above the usual tyre and wind noise, unaffected in pitch or tone it just gets louder or quieter with speed.

If you turn the wheel right a fraction (just enough to start wandering in lane) it gets quieter... turn a fraction left it gets louder.

Drives straight, doesn't wander or pull and all four hubs are equal temperature when I get home (none getting hot)

First thoughts was wheel-bearings, jacked up and checked... nothing

But found this in the inner O/S front inner side wall...



Obvious to me now the outer side wall has been painted with tyre paint by the dick head dealer, and the tyres are fked... but

Would/could that missing 1/2" chunk of rubber the cause such a loud "hum"?

I should think a damaged tyre could cause lots of noise. You should also have the geometry / alighnment checked...soemthing out of true and pushing a given edge will generate more friction and noise

Do the edges feel feathered if you run your hand over them. I got this with some Conti's with bad feathering on the outside edges, resulting in an increasing throbbing/drumming noise as I went faster.

I swapped the tyres over on the front axle so they were running in the reverse direction and it solved the problem until I changed the tyres. They were roughly half worn at the time. They were non-directional.
