A large part of it will probably be down to where you live.

Leeds has some pretty fruity postcodes from an insurers point of view.

What band is your postcode on this list: http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-rat... ?

The vast majority of Leeds postcodes seem to have horrible ratings.

What does it do to the premium if you try LD6 5EA as a postcode...?

Most insurers have a credit check on the rating so if you use someone else's postcode, you will not match up with the records hence a bigger premium, also do you think that £1800 to insure against £20million of third party property damage and unlimited PI cover is alot??

You're far from alone in under-estimating how much different postcode makes to car insurance premiums.

No-one ever does.

Damage for injuries and long term care can run into millions.

£700 for a 1.6 Golf no blackbox yikes
So there y'go. Confirmation that the problem is your postcode, definitely. You need to move away from urban Leeds.

That postcode belongs to the post office in a small town in the middle of Welsh rural nowhere, btw.

I moved from an F* (Greater London) to a B postcode (rural-ish Hampshire) 10 years ago. It knocked between a third and a half off the insurance premiums of each of the cars and motorcycles we had at the time.

My post-code is group-A too and I'm in a suburb of Southampton, so you don't have to live in the middle of nowhere to get cheap(ish) insurance. smile

Its just how it is for young drivers at the moment.

One could argue that if you don't drive fast then why do you want a larger engined car? So you can spend more on fuel?

Why not try something with VW's 1.4tsi engine? Can be quick but still have a lower cc

forget the credit check, the cops stop me all the time so I think I will eventually get caught out and yes its alot and ridiculous considering I dont drive like an idiot so I dont believe I will cause that much damage.

Insurers will look at power and performance rather than just engine capacity so a 1.4tsi is unlikely to be any better. The only thing that could help is finding a slightly more unusual car, one that you don't see as many young people driving.
