Sorry.... What sensible family car?

I'm not a fan of all these what car threads so I do apologies, I've never needed to do it before as I've always known what car I wanted! But, my wife and I are looking for a sensible family car now!
I've been looking on and off for a few months now and to be honest it's starting to do my head in. We are looking for:-
Good size...preferably estate or big saloon.
Fuel economy not worse than 35mpg
Good looking, not boring!!
Preferably petrol as it's not going to be used for loads of miles or long journeys.
Something which is not going to cost the earth to maintain.
The all important budget is a maximum of £6k.
We've been looking mainly at Audis and BMWs. I'm swaying towards an A4 estate 2.0 TFSI S line but finding one that is in decent condition and not done moon miles is difficult! My wife is swaying more towards a BMW of some kind, the problem with these is the diesels are not ideal for the kind of journeys it's going to be used for and the petrols are either uninspiring or pretty juicy.
The only diesel I would consider is the 1.9tdi VAG engine which is what we have in her Mk5 Golf at the moment...unfortunately finding one in an S-line B7 Audi is almost impossible!
I need to point out that she only likes the B7 shape Audis and she is extremely fussy!! It is her money after all. I would happily consider Passats, Skoda VRS etc, but the wife will not entertain these!
I'm just wondering if I have not considered any cars that are maybe not such an obvious choice. So I put it to the PH masses for any help and suggestions!
