Cancelled after people struck by a vehicle and seriously injured

Wouldn't catch me standing so close but I suppose that is part of the overall appeal of rally driving

Lots of unsubstatiated rumours doing the rounds now, inc several people saying either 2 or 3 dead, more injured.

Real shame.

We're on the Edrom stage, rumours of 4 dead which are hopefully just rumours getting out of hand, we had the cars past the house this morning, but all called off for the 2nd running, due 2 more stages on the Reivers tomorrow but can't see that happening now. No idea what happened, but people do stand in some bloody stupid places at rallies

Any casualties/death is obviously not good but I do have to wonder sometimes when I see where some of the specs. stand/behave trying to get a good photo shot. My fear then is the the daily mail crowd all vote and try to get these events banned which would be a greater shame IMHO.

We obviously need to wait for a fuller version of the facts but it would appear there has been an accident with multiple fatalities. We don't really know if it was down to driver error, mechanical failure or spectators not following safety precautions.

I do attend the odd rally/sprint/hillclimb and I'd agree that red tape isn't what's needed to prevent things like this happening but there are often things that could be done to reduce risk substantially in certain cases. Although it is difficult for a small number of volunteer marshals to control and monitor crowds constantly.

Latest info according to witness: "It was just one car which lost control. It went sideways one way and then to the other side of the road and ploughed into four people.

Police Scotland twitter says accident at 2pm - 4 injured , 1 taken to hospital in Edinburgh. Accident at 4pm - 3 dead , 1 seriously injured.

So there were two accidents.

I don't follow rallying closely but I must say that spectators do often seem to stand in quite unintelligible places. How many times have we all seen "near miss" videos where people jump out of the way, and/or are just missed by a wayward car. Is it just for the view or is there some "danger thrill" aspect?

Terrible for all concerned. Hopefully lessons can be learnt and behaviours modified without legislation.
