I've got a new bluemotion TDI on rental, just wondering why it limits the rpm when stationary? Is it to stop muppets like me over revving them when they are cold or something?

I would be guessing it's to stop people from redlining it and then dumping the clutch causing untold pain and misery on the clutch, gearbox and all other drivetrain components. It could also be to prevent turbo death from lots of RPM's in the turbo when there's little cooling air. There's probably something in the owners bible manual about it, too...

Isn't it the case if you turn the traction control off, it will let you rev the engine freely?

Not sure why you'd want to on a Bluemotion Golf though... hehe

To protect the engine against the daft MOT testing for diesels. Perhaps.

I read somewhere that revving an engine with no load can increase piston ring wear. Lots of cars have a low limit when in neutral. I recall my father-in-law convinced his Jag S Type had an issue well over a decade ago only to be told that was to protect the engine.

Forgive me for asking the obvious question but why would you want to rev the tits of a diesel Volkswagen at a standstill?
