garage pit cover

Hi all. Im new to the forum and im positive this is in the wrong section but didn't know where to put it.
I was fortunate to buy a house with a garage and a pit, the pit was filled up with rubble so had to remove it all first. Iv removed all the rubble and now I need a cover that I can drive onto. The angle to get onto the pit is pain and almost impossible to get over without having something covering the front of the pit. Is there anything available that doesn't cost the earth and is movable so I can actually work on a car. Thanks Arron

Thick oak planks would do it. Other than that, get some steel plate sections to cover it.

My grandfather has his own pit, and kept thick wood sheets over it to prevent the dogs/cars/grandchildren falling down it.

My neighbours is covered with railway sleepers but you obviously need to have a ledge cut out on either side of the pit to recess them into

Oak ??!! Railway Sleepers ???!! What's the span - 1.2m max ? 38mm scaffold boards will be OK

Would scaff boards hold the weight? Id have to measure it as im not sure.

Jack up your car. Put a length of scaffold board under one wheel. Put a brick under one end of the board and another 1.2m further from it.

Let down the car.

See how much the board bends.

A couple of those big square panels they put over holes is the road when they are digging them up? No idea what they are called though.

I've got six 1200mm x 150mm x 40mm hardwood planks covering my inspection pit. Absolutely fine.

as other posters have suggested the issue comes with covering the pit vs covering the pit and not having to worry about driving over it ...

if it was just to cover it you could use almost anything , if you only wanted to cover it and walk on it , thick ply or scaffolding boards would be more than adequate ...

The OP needs to drive over the pit to access his garage properly.
So thick planks etc would be needed. Ply wouldn't do it safely.

They dont cover the trench distance of thr pit. Nor do the big ones.

Personally I'd just cover it with netting and leaves and lure postman, milkman and passing children in.
could be fun for a while?
