First post and it's a biggie...

I have a Daimler Sovereign from 1977 with the 4.2 6 cylinder engine. It's done about 110k and it's reaching the end of its life. Loads of timing chain rattle, oil leaks galore, including from under three spark plugs, and smoke coming up through the dipstick and from under the filler cap. Looks like a new engine or a rebuild.

The rest of the car is pretty mint and it's too good to get shot of. Wandering whether anyone on this forum might be able to help out. Most mechanics don't want to take on this type of rebuild and I am a bit concerned about entering into a relationship with someone I don't know and whose experience might not be relevant. I am also worried about getting a 'new' engine as there are few guarantees that what I'm buying is any better than what is coming out.

Had the head off 12 months ago and a new head gasket, which makes life a little easier for anyone taking on the work, as they do have a tendency to seize on when old.

If anyone has any contacts that might help me out then I would be grateful. I am based in East London but the car is still very driveable (in fact it runs like a dream as they always do, even when they are shot!). I am happy to deliver it to somewhere (within reason). I also have a mechanic who is prepared to do the engine swap for a reasonable fee and who will take delivery of the engine.

Get in touch if you can help.

Thanks,

Jon

TL Jaguar in Wokingham should be able to sort you out. They're not the cheapest but really know what they're doing.

Sadly not - Westminster blue saloon. Beautiful car, bodywork is very standard

I have a friend who is having his e-type restored with a major engine overhaul and also has an XJ 6 from 1974 which is also off to Winspeed just outside Guildford. Top engine people if a little slow. They need pushing but do great engine work at reasonable prices.

Would a swap to an AJ16 not be cheaper than an XK rebuild? Better gearboxes as well.
