In January 2012, I bought a MINI Cooper S (boring I know). At the time, I looked at this one http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m... but it was overpriced then as they wanted over £10k.

What I don't understand is : it's still overpriced now.

What it the point of pricing yourself out of the market ?

Some idiot will come along one day and buy on impulse, doing no research and not realising how overpriced it is. You then make a nice profit. I'd rather keep a car for 3 months and make £2k than keep it 3 days and make £200, especially if it'll have a new MOT anyway.

I was thinking much the same the other day.

I'm selling my Fiat ( frown ) so I was looking at rough market values. The average Seicdento Sporting is around £650 for a very clean, low mileage one.
There's more than one dealer around with them on their forecourts for £1500+!!
I imagine they'll be around a very long time!

I've no personal experience to the validity of this claim, but I have heard it come up on here once or twice, and a car dealer friend of mine with his own business / forecourt reckons he's had success with it in the past:

If he's been selling a car and it's been hanging around a wee bit too ling for comfort (his threshold being about a month) then sometimes INCREASING the price has created more interest and a subsequent sale.

Maybe this is why?

Who says it's overpriced?

If it's you, on what basis?

I believe this to be true. A dealer friend had a very well cared for Mercedes which he'd picked up cheap at auction. Stuck his standard margin on it and it was the cheapest for sale and nothing. Not a single call. He increased the price and sold the car within a few days. Reckoned it looked too cheap and had put people off.

A rarity though as most people viewed solely on price and he'd had plenty of 'I can buy the same car much cheaper elsewhere'

Maybe he has another identical car that's priced cheaper to make it look better value.

Dealers do do strange things, I was looking at a mini from the synter group. Was priced a little high. Looked at other cars in group stock whilst I was there and one appeared near identical at a grand less, they offered free transfer etc, I pointed out the price difference and asked if they could just lower the near identical one in the forecourt but they said no can do. Even the sales rep said it was stupid but could not be done untill the end of month price review.

Because it's quite a lot more expensive than similar cars in the trade. The asking price is about £1,000 too high and it would probably sell for £1,500 less than it's advertised at. Just for clarity, the dealer have been trying to sell that very car for 30 months. They have progressively reduced the price but were always behind the market. They kind of reduced it by the amount of depreciation if suffered while in their care but no more. If they had priced right to start with they might have had a chance to sell. But maybe they bought badly, but they should have cut their losses by now surely.

Seems bright orange mk2 focus st's are also expensive to. Most seem to be beyond 10k even for a 08 plate. Some are 15k!! A grand more gets you in the new one in the same(but less bright) orange flavour.

I'm starting to thing these are special case cars though. The colour is no longer offered and for people interested in this sort of thing the car definitely had many desirable points over the new one.
