Autobahn Insurance

Hi All,

I have a planned road trip due to start next week to Germany. I have just been told by a colleague that I am most likely not insured to drive on the Autobahn!

I have called the insurance company and they have confirmed that I cannot drive on the autobahn.

Are there any recommend the companies that can offer this or am i stuck?

I know Autobahns have a mythical status with some people but they are after all just the German motorway system , I find this quite incredible

Ring them back and ask if you're allowed drive on the AutoRoute and see what they say

I take it that you have cover for outside the UK on your policy anyway

Normally it's just a case of phoning the insurance company and letting them know which countries you'll be visiting.

Does seem very odd how they can preclude you from driving on a motorway if you hold a full UK license

Your insurance _has_ to cover you on all public roads in all countries signed up to the various international agreements. EU is taken as read, along with all "civilised" geographical European countries. OK, it'll be bare-minimum cover (TPO, effectively), but it's there. A real international "Green Card" is needed for other countries - and you'll usually need to show it at the border or buy a local policy for those countries.

Your insurers will usually give you your normal cover for 30, 60, 90 days at a time, or mebbe total within the year. That's the bit that people normally think of as "Foreign Cover" or "Green Card".

So, if for some bizarre reason, your insurer really are scaredy-cats when it comes to Autobahn (rather than the 'ring), then you will still have TPO cover. Just no more than that.

I explained I have previously been told I am not covered and gave the advisor name she went away and come back and said sorry he is a trainee !!!]
