Private plate coming off a car and putting the original on?

Hi guys,

I am looking to sell my car. I need to remove the current private reg off and put it back on the original plate.

Once removed the Private plate has nowhere to be put back on. So I assume it will need to be retained. Until I but a replacement car that is.

Do i need to fill in a V750 form?

Could anyone please tell me which forms need to be filled out.

You'll need a V317, available here https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

£105 fee and send the completed form with your original V5C logbook and MOT together with a cheque for £105 to DVLA Swansea SA99 1DS.

At the moment they're taking 2-3 weeks, you'll get back a replacement MOT and tax disk in the age related reg, then a V5C in this reg.

I googled, but the whole process is so convoluted!

I assume once I retain the plate, the DVLA in their divine wisdom wil stick the old plate back on the car?

If i was to stick the retained plate on a new car, I assume the £105 would include the cost to do so?

Yes they will.

IIRC they should also send you a form in which you can have a set of plates made up at your local garage if you don't have the old set.

Try the Local DVLA Centre...They give you all the right Forms and Advice plus they will sort it all out for you a helluva lot quicker.

You mean the local DVLA centre, most/all of which are now closed ? It all goes through Swansea now, and therefore also takes a lot longer.

They don't always put it back on its old plate - it may have been issued to another vehicle.

My Elise started its life on a V plate, and when I bought it, had a random T plate.

I've no idea why this is such a time consuming faff. Just done a transfer onto a new car and had to fill out two desperate paper based forms, write a cheque (Seriously? a cheque?) and then post it all off and wait weeks.

It's a fairly simple database transaction, why can this not be done online?

DVLA probably don't want it done online so that you can't retain the previous tax disc, V70 and MOT showing a now incorrect plate opening up lots of interesting fraud options.

However why the post office network couldn't be setup to offer cherished transfers same day I do not know. Same day click and collect service would make a lot of sense whereby the transfer is basically done online with the post office just taking your old papers and printing new ones.

As far as I know when you put the vanity plate on DVLA gets rights to the original registration. If that hasn't been sold or transferred or whatever you might get it back. Otherwise the car gets a completely new, but correct age, random registration. Of course DVLA get the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the old reg number.

I bought a second hand car that went through this exact process and it got issued a random new plate. The only difference is the random plate was 'non-transferrable'. This means that it can't be used on another car. It is possible to put another vanity plate on a car with a non-transferrable registration but if THAT gets taken off it gets the non-transferrable number back. If the car gets scrapped or exported with the vanity plate intact both vanity and non-transferrable numbers die with it.

I think the idea is to stop the same car having, potentially, four or five different identities in its life. I think the other part of this is a DVLA money spinner. If they made original registrations non-transferrable they'd lose out in the vanity aftermarket. However the non-transferrable registrations are weirdly random combinations that no-one would want as a vanity plate.

Same here in Norn Ireland. 300+ jobs going in local Licensing offices and all business transfers to Swansea in July!
We have never had the Retention Cert system here for cherished nos, so they had to be immediately transferred to other vehicles. The vehicle losing the cherished plate generally is allocated a new current plate rather than age-related.
Because of the non-retention cert system here I am currently in the situation of having purchased a plate from local Dvla some 17 years ago and am unable to transfer or sell because the car in question would be cost prohibitive to pass a Mot!!
No indication thus far if the system will change for us with the move to Swansea.Mad!

If youre going through swansea expect a wait - I was the buyer of a car that needed its private plate swapping back and was sat waiting for 5 weeks after placing a deposit for the paperwork to show up.

I posted my transfer paperwork last Tuesday and the transfer was completed yesterday.

The V5's are always a few weeks behind the actual transfer.
